Defining the Millennial Consumer

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Headline_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

More than 80 million consumers today are described as millennial consumers, so it’s time to figure them out, if you haven’t already. Millennial consumers will be responsible for annual expenditures of over $200B by 2017, according to research.

They’re however not the easiest crowd to please. They demand working technology, research every purchase and broadcast their buying consideration online. They want to be heard, to be immersed in the brand experience. But who are they?

Who they are

Millennial consumers are those born after 1981, making up about 27% of the population in the US. They represent the most diverse generation yet, with 20% being of Hispanic descent and 26% being multiracial. They move out of home and marry much later than preceding generations.

Their motivations

Millennials are early adopters who depend heavily on technology; 30% have and use at least four tech gadgets in a day and check their smartphones around 43 times daily.

However, their financial status is mostly transitional, with 18% still living with and dependent on their parents, 25% live with parents but have full-time jobs, 20% have part-time jobs whilst 55% anticipate a dramatic change in their financial positions in the next year.

How they shop

Millennial consumers depend on word of mouth heavily and have the most complicated buying cycle. 68% are unmoved by celebrity endorsements, 66% turn to peers for advice, 59% turn to their significant other, whilst 37% go to their parents for techy buys.

95% made a purchase following recommendations from friends or family, with 83% trusting these recommendations over any brand ad claims. 93% research reviews prior to purchasing with 93% of them trusting anonymous reviews found on e-commerce platforms and 77% trusting brand website product reviews.

How they can be reached

Simply, online. 56% use social networking apps, 90% are on Facebook with 42% using it daily and 25% posting daily updates. You can’t call them, 52% prefer having text conversations.

66% follow some brands on social media, with only 41% stating they enjoy brand interactions. 38% find brands with social presence more trustworthy and 60% follow brands to stay informed on coupons and deals.

A Day in the Life of an Activations Manager

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Headline_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

No one could ever accuse life in activations of being boring. In fact, that is one of the things I love most about my job – every day is different, even activations we have done many times have enough variables for things to be completely different each time. There is something very special about taking the smallest nugget of an idea or brief from client, and managing its development through to the big day – ACTIVATION DAY!

There is always so much excitement the day before an activation. We hope that all the months of planning result in something truly wonderful for our clients and that they get the return on investment that they hope for.

So as we settle in for a (restless) night’s sleep, we await the morning…

04:00 – Alarm goes off.

04:10 – Snooze alarm goes off, get out of bed.

05:00 – Leave home.

05:15 – Fetch promoters at the office.

05:30 – Fetch last 2 promoters at another general point, as they couldn’t get to the office in time due to no public transport at this hour.

05:40 – We are on our way!

06:30 – Arrive at destination XYZ.

06:35 – Find site manager, introduce myself, and find out where to set up.

06:45 – Manage our amazing Ops Team in setting up an assortment of Bedouin tents, gazebos, giant inflatables, table, branding, banners, etc.

07:00 – While this is going on, I need to round up my promoters. I will assign them to their posts, ensure that they are in optimal condition to offer their very best service to us and the client!

08:00 – By now the set-up is pretty much complete, bar a few changes that might need to be made, or crises to be averted – generator won’t start, weather issues, a vital piece of equipment in the wrong vehicle, etc.

08:30 – It is go time – the activation is about to start. Why does it feel like I have had a full day already?

09:00 – Time for me to grab a cup of coffee. First time I’ve had a minute to myself all day! This is when I usually work out a break schedule for my hard-working promoters. To ensure that they remain energetic and enthusiastic all day, we need to ensure that they are drinking enough water and that they have at least 1 break to eat a hearty meal.

09:00 – 15:00 – The activation is in full swing. The promoters are on top of their game, running the activation exactly how they were trained. This is why we insist on using promoters that have not only been through our training academy, but also attended an activation specific briefing the week before the activation. This eliminates any confusion on the day.

A prepared team is a well-oiled team.

The less margin for error we have, the more successful the activation on the day. As the Activations Manager, my job is to manage any consumer queries that are out of the ordinary, settle any issues that may arise and ensure that the activation area is spotless and professional all day. I am also there to interact with the client should they wish to visit the activation on the day. The Ops Team is at the ready all day – they are there to replenish stock, supply giveaways, maintain the cleanliness of the area and assist with any heavy lifting. They are usually available on a 2 way radio, which is most effective for a busy activation where cell phone network connectivity could be compromised.

15:00 – This is when the Ops Team start to evaluate how much stock and giveaways they are bringing out. With just a few hours of the day left they need to make sure we have enough supplies at the ready, but not too many to make packing up a big deal.

16:00 – This is when we the team gets a powerful surge of energy before the completion of the activation. This is the time to really push the activation objectives, and ensure that we have reached EVERYBODY that we possibly could have. This is the make-or-break time of the activation!

17:00 – Time to pack up. By now, the whole team has really bonded over the course of the day. Everyone gets stuck in to ensure a quick, efficient set down. Once all the small elements are packed away, promoters go to change out of their uniforms, with the Ops Team tackling the big elements.

18:00 – The site is empty, the sun has gone down, and it is time for me to find the event organizer, offer my thanks for a great day, and get out of there.

19:30 – Drop promoters off at home/at the office for their transport.

20:00 – Arrive home exhausted, wind-swept, possibly sunburnt, but with a feeling of great accomplishment. Once I have soaked my weary bones and had a bite to eat, I fall into bed with a happy heart and enjoy a well-earned rest.

Depending on the duration of the activation, that alarm may be set for 04:00 for tomorrow again!

Business Development Referral Strategies

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Headline_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

Referral Strategies

A key to having a robust referral strategy is to make sure that your current clients are aware that you actually want referrals. Referrals from happy customers are one of best ways that B2B companies generate new business. OK, this isn’t a huge surprise. However, what is surprising how few companies have a dedicated strategy for fostering these valuable personal hand-offs.

4 Obvious, Yet Wonderful Benefits Of A Referral

A referral is a white-hot lead. If we assume that your happy customers are savvy enough to recommend you to the right potential customer then you are well on your way to establishing a valuable conversation and a new business win.

The closing ratio of referrals is higher (it has been reported that the closing-ratio of a referral is 6 times greater than an unqualified lead.)

For the obvious reason that a referred prospect is generally a very motivated buyer, the referral-generated sales cycle can be as much as 75% shorter.

A referral strategy is cost-effective and will reduce your sales expenditures – free is good. Free is a great place to start.

6 Effective ‘Active’ Referral Strategies

I’ve generated referrals from existing clients and customers using the following set of strategies. Given the fact that you are talking to happy customers or friends, these strategies will be a very efficient use of your “sales” effort.

  1. Start with an objective. Know what increase in referrals you are targeting and what type of clients you want. Unqualified referrals are not a good thing.
  2. Determine which of your clients or friends, these could be people you talk with or people you stay in touch with on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are contacts that might know the people or businesses on your prospect list. Do the research to help your clients help you.
  3. Go ahead… ask for referrals. Some referrals come because your client or buddy is specifically asked if they know of a good company in a your business category. Some come because your customers love you so much they actively ‘sell’ you. Some need to be stimulated to think about how to help you. It’s OK to ask. It is also wise to let them know what type of referral you are looking for. Take away as much guess work as you can. Make it easy for them to refer you. But, do not overdo it. Clearly, you do not what your clients to feel burdened.
  4. However, before you ask, make sure that your current clients are motivated to refer your service or products. I’ve written about how to determine which of your clients might be referral magnets. Check out: Is Your Agency Loved?
  5. You might need a bit of time to massage your clients through the delivery of unexpected services ahead of directly asking for their help. As they say, give and ye shall receive.
  6. A big must. If you get a referral, make sure that you keep the referrer informed about your conversations and any progress. Don’t forget to say thank you. If you actually win new business, you might want to consider sending a gift as follow-up.

Door To Door Marketing

Face to Face Marketing and Door to Door Marketing

Nothing beats the reality that one gets when you can interact with potential clients face to face physically moving from door to door within a community or household to household, face to face field marketing is also called personal selling or door to door marketing, customers are met directly in order to sell their products, using this method of field marketing we rely on our skills and persuasive abilities. During the period where we get to interact with the client face to face we get more chance to pass across edible information which would be useful to all our customers at that time and it’s also an opportunity for us to get feedback and to gauge your opinion about our business.

Door to Door marketing and Face to Face marketing is a more effective traditional form of marketing, it’s one of the oldest forms of marketing and we use promotion as a means to drive sales to your company or business. There’s nothing more exhilarating than getting to interact with potential customers through face to face marketing and over the years customers are aware and very receptive to this marketing approach through supermarkets and public business places.

The benefit of this type of field marketing is that it can be done on a low budget, it is very cost effective and reaches a larger number of people per within a very short duration, in this short period of time where you have just a few minutes to convince the customers to take interest in your business, just a few minutes to build personal relations through five stages. By attention, interest, desire, conviction and action.  And what else do you benefit by using face to face marketing service?

It gives you the chance to build a certain level of confidence and trust with the customers, you get to break down communication barrier of communication and it gives you the opportunity to show clarity and answer any questions on the mind of the customers.

While many think that door to door marketing is getting neglected in this very era it still yields more results especially during startups of businesses, think about it. Other forms of marketing get lower results, emails get spammed, adverts go unnoticed and phone calls go unanswered so why not just take your business directly to them. It’s only through personal interaction that you get the chance to connect with the customer, you would be selling more than a product.

You would be selling your zeal, emotions and passion

We offer a wide range of marketing services to business of different functions in India, startup businesses are not left out and we cut across all methods of marketing services, with Door to Door marketing service we assist you our clients with reaching your target customers, our services which extends to all parts of India and we target customers who are ready to change their local services to yours. We can assure you that our face to face methods would be conducted with high regards to personal safety and very good competence.

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

Door-to-door marketing is a canvassing technique that is generally used for sales, marketing, advertising, or campaigning, in which the person or persons walk from the door of one house to the door of another, trying to sell or advertise a product or service to the general public or gather information. People who use this sales approach are often called traveling salesmen, or the archaic name drummer, to “drum up” business. This technique is also sometimes called direct sales. A variant of this involves cold calling first, when another sales representative attempts to gain agreement that a salesperson should visit.

With the realization of telephone “Do Not Call” lists it is becoming increasingly more difficult to connect with consumers and business people. An emerging trend is the deployment of very professional, highly skilled door-to-door canvassers to drive product sales and brand awareness.

Coordinating, training and motivating these teams to produce results are at the very core of Fulcrum’s proven capabilities. Fulcrum has the knowledge and experience required to implement these programs, such as best days and times to canvass, who will sell the most product; male, female, young or mature and what geographics and demographics respond best to door-to-door marketing. Put Fulcrum’s experience to work for you and avoid the costly mistakes of trying to manage these programs in-house.

Hire and Train Door-to-Door Marketing Team

If you’re in charge of hiring people, that typically means that you’ve found success in Door To Door Marketing yourself. You know what it takes to be great, but now you’re stuck with an entirely new problem. How do you find others who will be just as good (if not better) and will stick around and grow into important influencers invested in the long term growth of the company? A great D2D sales company is a great recruiting company. So what does that greatness look like?

First off, you need to realize that you’re not going to hire a superstar every time. If you think you have found one, be careful. It’s not hard for someone to seem golden during one interview and you don’t want to be fooled.

Even if you think the candidate does have a lot of great experience working in the field for other companies, you have to realize that success doesn’t always translate. What worked for them at previous companies probably won’t work as well for you. In fact, their success will probably make them stubborn; after all, what reason do they have to follow your approach when they’ve figured out their own?

It’s also possible that the rep’s previous company might have had much better-developed training and selling systems than you do, and that system was the key reason they killed it. If you’re not developing a competitive system, what does that communicate about your company? The more dialed-in you are about a rep’s success, the more likely you are to attract and keep strong performers.

Brand Small Business 2018

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Headline_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

Every week as SmallBizLady, I conduct interviews with experts on my Twitter talk show #SmallBizChat. The show takes place every Wednesday on Twitter from 8-9 pm ET.  This is excerpted from my recent interview with Yali Saar, who is the is the CEO of Tailor Brands, an automated branding agency. He is a former creative for BBDO & Chief Creative Officer for Raising the Bar.  For more information:  www.tailorbrands.com.

SmallBizLady: As 2017 ends, why is it important that entrepreneurs create a strategic plan for the upcoming year?

Yali Saar: Influential branding can really make the difference between a small coffee shop failing or becoming a multibillion dollar franchise. Branding is really the difference between customers paying $5 or $15 for the sandwich you make. It’s a name, a reputation, an image that sticks with you and in some cases, it can even be a state of mind.

SmallBizLady: HOW CAN SMALL BUSINESSES AFFORD THIS HIGH LEVEL OF BRANDING?

Yali Saar: You’re right, good branding can be costly, and it’s hard to compete with the spending budgets of top tier brands. Like most businesses, they recognize this problem as “time + talent = money”, so they will need to decide to remove the time factor from this equation.

This is where automated design comes in, to level the playing field and allow small businesses to create unique and memorable branding. The solution – an algorithm that could “think” like a designer, essentially translating the world as a designer would see it.

SmallBizLady: WHAT EXACTLY IS AUTOMATED DESIGN?

Yali Saar: Automated design is the process in which a program enables us to mechanize design functions that we were previously performing manually. The machine-based learning algorithm creates a logo and design assets in a matter of minutes based on a series of preferences chosen by the user. A logo is really just a combination of a font, a typeface and a style, so once all elements are chosen by the user, the system can automatically generate the results.

SmallBizLady: HOW DOES THIS WORK FOR THE USER?

Yali Saar: A user will first input the name of their business and share a little bit about the nature of what they do. Then, the program starts a little game, trying to make the experience as similar to working with an actual designer. The user would be shown a couple of images refereed to “this or that”, pick their preferences based on style or font type. Users can also choose a specific icon, initial or structure for the design.  After a few questions, the system will generate about nine logos for the user to choose between. Once the logo is created, users can further customize the design and change certain elements so it matches what they had imagined.

SmallBizLady: WHY WOULD A SMALL BUSINESS CHOOSE AUTOMATED DESIGN INSTEAD OF HIRING A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

Yali Saar:  The beauty of an automated platform is that the system will utilize this design on all branded assets, eliminating paying extra for each item a la carte. The logo should become the basis of your marketing efforts and the advantage of using an automated service is that it can be easily transferred into different designs. All of your assets will become branded since you can seamlessly place your logo on business cards for each employee as they join, daily social posts for your Facebook page and a banner for your business at a tradeshow. Since automated design is a true technological output and becomes smarter each day, you can create all of these assets without relying on any templates in the background. It’s the combination of the quality and product range of an agency with the speed and price of an automated platform.

SmallBizLady: WHAT TYPE OF LOGO DESIGN DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR SMALL BUSINESSES WHO WANT TO CREATE A RECOGNIZABLE AND TIMELESS DESIGN?

Yali Saar: There are timeless logos and there are trends. I would recommend a plain text logo, or as it’s called a typography logo, since these type of designs are generally very timeless and never go out of style. Some logos that come to mind are Dior and the New York Times as these designs are comprised of just a simple yet elegant font.

SmallBizLady: WHAT KIND OF LOGO DESIGN SHOULD BUSINESSES AVOID WHEN DESIGNING THEIR BRANDING?

Yali Saar:  Avoid dynamic logos, which are logos that change every time you use them, confusing the customer and lacks consistency. Pick a logo that can withstand the years, and continue being timeless like the Ford logo while accepting updates without becoming completely transformed. A logo is something that you live with for a long time – you really have to take a hard look and decide, this is what I want to go with.

SmallBizLady: CAN YOU IDENTIFY ANY TRENDS WITHIN THE BRANDING AND DESIGN WORLD THAT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR USERS WHEN CREATING THEIR LOGO?

Yali Saar: Yes, the current trend is the simplification, i.e., understanding how recognizable a logo can be. Take the MasterCard logo as an example. In their latest rebrand, they changed their logo to just two circles, without the word MasterCard in the middle that they have had for years. The fact that people can just recognize the brand by seeing one circle in red and the other circle in yellow – that’s the aspiration of any brand.

SmallBizLady: HOW CAN BRANDING MAKE A SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL?

Yali Saar: It’s about recognizing the brand’s jingle, tagline or color scheme long after the advertisement is over or your car has passed the billboard. Successful branding is more than just a logo, it’s a process that extends to every aspect of your business. It is building strategy, keeping your social presence active and so much more. These things have always required large budgets, which sets a barrier of entry for many projects and small business out there. This is where automated branding comes in to really break down these barriers and give everyone with an idea a fair chance.

SmallBizLady: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS WHO ARE JUST GETTING STARTED?

Yali Saar: There are two points to remember. First, the brand and design should truly project what you’re trying achieve – what action you would like your customers to take or to acknowledge in the product that you’re setting forth. Secondly, stay consistent across your marketing material and brand message. Utilize the same language and maintain brand continuity across all platforms. This will allow your customers to identify you, become followers and eventually convert.

SmallBizLady: When should small businesses begin to grow their presence online?

Yali Saar: Immediately. When you’re building up any brand, the first line of defense towards your credibility is your online presence. Once customers are interested in your business, the first thing they will do is type your name on the web and search for your business. If you don’t appear there, any outreach or anything that you make, including any email that you have sent, is less credible. Even if you can’t start a website, just start a Facebook page with that logo and start posting there. It would give your project so much more credibility when you’re trying people are looking to connect with a business, and that is priceless

B2B Experiential Marketing – When does it work?

What is experiential marketing? On the rise in recent years, retailer Marketing enterprise in pune and experiential marketing is all about customer interaction with your brand. It offers a unique experience with products or services, allowing customers to get a feel for how they would use it in their lives. For years marketers have been trying to get customers to use and trial their products. In this way it’s not a new concept; there have however, certainly been some innovative spins on how it’s done. Let’s look at experiential marketing, how it can work for B2Bs and some of the ways it can help build your brand.

Emotional + Experiential Branding = Experiential Marketing The two elements that underpin experiential marketing are emotional branding and experiential branding.

Emotional branding: is about building the relationship between your brand and customers. Promoting emotional benefits like brand trust, security and credibility as a result of engaging with your brand is crucial. Experiential branding: designs and creates interactions that are sensory in nature, which emotionally influences preferences, shaping brand perception, and influencing satisfaction and loyalty. Finding Your Brand’s Social Media Voice

[siteorigin_widget class="SiteOrigin_Widget_Headline_Widget"][/siteorigin_widget]

To Respond or Not to Respond – That is the Question:

In today’s landscape, consumers expect brands to demonstrate accessibility with responsiveness on every social platform. Above all, consumers want to engage and feel like they are conversing with an actual human being.

But, it isn’t just that responsive brands get rewarded for their social media acumen. Those that choose to ignore consumers on social media face a real possibility of backlash. Take the Cracker Barrel, for example. The casual serve restaurant was the target of public outrage when a consumer named Brad asked why they had fired his wife. Because the restaurant chose to remain silent, the masses were quick to share their thoughts on the situation. Before long, amidst an onslaught of social media heckling, a Facebook page and hashtag were created entitled #JusticeforBradsWife. In addition, a petition demanding answers emerged, garnering tens of thousands of signatures. Comedians and meme creators gave it further traction, and although much of this activity was in jest, it had a tangible impact on Cracker Barrel’s image.

Join the Conversation

Brands that have an active voice on social media and stay on top of trends succeed in remaining a relevant part of the current conversation. For example, during the 2017 Solar Eclipse, MoonPie won over fans when its account responded to Hostess Cupcakes’ declaration of being the “Official Snack Cake of the Eclipse.” With a curt, two-word reply, the 100-year-old brand was officially back on the radar, and meme amplification soon followed.

Another favorite? During the 2014 Grammy awards, Arby’s noticed an uncanny similarity between Pharrell’s hat and its iconic logo –  so much so that it tweeted directly to the singer and asked for the hat back.  Naturally, Arby’s achieved thousands of retweets and media attention, but the real win was when Pharrell playfully responded by asking if Arby’s was “Tryna start a roast beef?” This is the kind of organic PR you simply can’t pay for.

Authenticity is Everything

This is the most important consideration because, without it, even the best intentions can backfire.  Adopting the voice of the consumer is a tricky endeavor when you are a faceless, big-box brand, and there is a fine line between being authentic and trying too hard.

When Jell-O launched its tongue-in-cheek “Fun My Life” campaign, leveraging the popular #FML hashtag, it intended for consumers to appreciate the play on words with a wink and a nod.  However, Jell-O missed the mark by trying to force a shift from a sarcastic and self-deprecating tone to one that was overly “fun” and highly branded. In the end, it came off as if the brand didn’t really understand the sentiment behind #FML, and that it was completely out of touch.

Communicating with consumers via social media is an integral part of the brand experience.

Brands need to consider their tone, message, and the potential impact these interactions can have on customer loyalty.  Although social media may not appear to have a direct correlation to the bottom line, it is important to remember that all experiences will invariably reflect on purchase behavior. When comparing your brand to the competition, social media is the ultimate equalizer – unbound by budget, size of brand, or marketing resources. So, take advantage of the opportunity. Be involved, be responsive, be relevant, and be authentic. If you can accomplish those things, you’ll find yourself at top of mind for consumers everywhere.

B2B Experiential Marketing – When does it work?

What is experiential marketing? On the rise in recent years, Colleges Marketing agent in pune and experiential marketing is all about customer interaction with your brand.

An excellent experiential marketing campaign is able to fuse both elements seamlessly together. Experiential Marketing for B2Bs In recent years interest in B2B experiential marketing has grown and some of the initial hesitation surrounding it has been replaced with a working understanding, when to do it, and how it stimulates ROI. For B2Bs, experiential marketing is generally less obvious, with the focus often on services (for example) in place of B2C exciting product launches. Oftentimes the B2B budget is also stretched. However we are seeing marketers begin to recognise the potentials that the experience can offer consumers. “The success of brand experience within the B2C market has not gone unnoticed, and B2B marketers are waking up to the potential of brand experience. However, there is a long way to go before they catch up with their B2C counterparts.” – Graham Ede, Ion Group 3 Examples of B2B experiential marketing Location with B2Bs can be one of the major barriers, and while it may not be easy to do experiential marketing in quite the same way as B2C, there’s certainly room to employ some of the same principals. Creating sensory interactions that promote core feelings of trust, and awareness of your product or services is central to this. Fulcrum marketing in public spaces – Linked with experiential, some marketers use a form of Fulcrum marketing. They tend to hold this drive in places where there are high concentrations of business buyers. Branded promotional staff can offer business people the opportunity to enter in a promotion, or sign up to attend an event whilst promoting the benefits of the product.  demonstrations & reward – as part of a targeted marketing strategy, those in the IT space can offer information via webinar or video, which can showcase some aspects of the technology solution. Some marketing and web-based tools such as  offer a free trial period, together with online coaching via Skype. This allows the user to build confidence in using the tool, and to experience all of the benefits of the trial period. At the end of the trial period (7 days), the participant is given a report with feedback on how well they have used the tool. Then they are awarded a certificate. Surprises and games – Surprising customers by showing up where they least expect you, gifting them, or sending them a card is a way to provide an out of the box experience and drive brand awareness. Another option could be to exhibit at a partner’s event as IBM did. Their interactive stand came complete with a candy bar, and plasma screens which posted live tweets from event attendees. Digital technology such as apps and games are also opportunity areas, and while often costly, look set to become more widespread and affordable in future. Experiential marketing reflects the growing importance of emphasising emotions to build successful brands. Digital media offers expanding opportunities to offer such experiences. In the ever-competitive B2B marketplace, it’s no longer enough to rely on traditional modes for lead generation. B2B marketers need to consider the complete kit that is available to them including; social media, mobile, search, paid advertising, print, telemarketing and increasingly placing emotion at the heart of it all with an experiential approach.
