Small Business Brand Marketing:B To B marketing | one to one marketing operation Khar

5 Tips For Taking Your Brand to Market

Part 1 of our Brand Basics for Small Business series, we covered the crucial first steps to setting up your brand. Once you’ve taken those initial steps and got your brand off the ground, the next stage is to start marketing, in order to raise awareness of your brand, build a customer base, and drive sales for your business. To help you get started, we’ve got five important tips for taking your brand to market.

Tip 1: Get your messaging right

In business, first impressions mean a great deal – so what your initial marketing communicates about your brand will shape the (usually lasting) opinion potential customers form about your brand.

Spend time developing clear, compelling brand messaging that succinctly communicates your brand, ties in with your brand identity, and is relevant to your target audience. Bear in mind that as your brand develops and grows, you’ll need to be able to continue delivering this messaging consistently across all platforms, so getting it right in the early stages is essential.

Tip 2: Choose the right channels

Small businesses are faced with a vast array of potential marketing tactics through which to promote their brand. From digital marketing to direct mail, the key is to identify those channels that are most appropriate to your brand – and are most likely to attract the attention of potential customers. This is where thorough market research (discussed in Part 1) is vital, as you’ll need a clear understanding of your target audience and what channels have the best chance of reaching them.

Potential marketing channels include email marketing, brochures and flyers, social media, event marketing and many more. For some ideas on using a selection of these channels successfully, check out our Guide to Becoming Marketing Active.

Tip 3: Provide clear calls to action – and incentives for following them

Whether your call to action is driving traffic to your website, encouraging email newsletter opt-ins, or increasing your social media following, you need to make this call to action as clear and straightforward as possible. Confusion or ambiguity is an immediate turn-off, so make sure you spell out exactly what people need to do and how to do it.

Behind every call to action, you need to answer the question that is inevitably on the minds of your audience: “what’s in it for me?”. By providing compelling incentives for performing the desired action, your audience is much more likely to follow your lead.

Tip 4: Go for the highest quality you can afford

While budget will always play an important role in small business marketing considerations, opting for cheap-looking, inferior quality marketing materials can do considerable damage to your brand in both the short-term and the long-term. At this early stage it’s important to remember that, as mentioned above, first impressions are critical.

Quality doesn’t just extend to the physical materials on which your marketing is delivered. Skimping on components like copywriting or design can be just as off-putting as cheap paper, so avoid cutting costs by doing it yourself. If price is an issue, consider taking a ‘less is more’ approach and focusing on doing a few key tactics well.

Tip 5: Know your goals from the outset

Before you commence any type of marketing, you need to know what you want to achieve from this activity. Once you’ve established a set of clearly defined goals, you will be able to identify the steps you need to take to achieve these targets.

When setting marketing goals, it’s important to choose targets that are achievable, as well as ensuring you are as clear as possible about your goals. Be specific about what each goal involves and outline timeframes for achievement to work towards. In addition, it’s vital to make sure your marketing goals are easy to track and measure.

While there are many other areas you’ll need to consider before embarking on a marketing strategy, taking time to focus on these five areas will provide you with a strong starting point on which to build.

Stay tuned for the final part of our Brand Basics series, in which we’ll be looking at how to maintain your brand in the long term.

We’d love to hear your experiences of taking a brand to market – if you’ve got your own tips, why not share them with the MIH community? Get in touch by leaving your comments below…

Putting It Together: Marketing Mix

Putting It Together: Marketing Mix

Synthesis

Photo of a pile of red Coca-Cola bottle caps.

In this chapter you have seen how businesses use the marketing mix to gain market share, enhance the value of their brand, and attract and retain customers in order to increase revenue and profit. Let’s take a final look at this from the perspective of the most valuable brand in the world: Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola is sold in more than two hundred countries around the world and represents nearly 43 percent of all carbonated beverages consumed in the United States annually. About 1.7 billion servings of Coke products are consumed every day. The products that Coca-Cola has used to capture the thirst of so many people go far beyond that iconic red can of soda. In fact, Coke makes so many different beverages that if you drank one per day, it would take you more than nine years to try them all. Coca-Cola has a product portfolio of more than 3,500 beverages (and 500 brands)—everything from sodas to energy drinks to soy-based drinks.[1]

The pricing strategy of Coca-Cola is what they refer to as ”meet-the-competition pricing”: Coca-Cola product prices are set around the same level as their competitors, because Coca-Cola has to be perceived as different but still affordable. Coca-Cola uses lower price points to penetrate new markets that are especially sensitive to price. They meet or beat the competition on price to raise brand awareness. Once the brand is established in the market, Coca-Cola repositions itself as the “premium” brand in comparison to its numerous competitors (Pepsi, for example). One way they accomplish this is by promoting a brand image of bringing intangible benefits in lifestyle, group affiliation, joy, and happiness . . . but the marketing strategy still focuses on an affordable premium product.

Coca-Cola has won a multitude of advertising industry awards for their innovative and effective promotional strategy. The promotionsthat Coca-Cola uses to further enhance its brand image and gain market share have included things like free hotel vouchers in Europe, Olympic sponsorship, the National Football League “Red Zone” promotion, and even “peel and win” stickers on Big Gulp cups at 7-Eleven.

Finally, the place, or distribution, of Coca-cola products is truly amazing. If you stacked up Coke’s 2.8 million vending machines, they would take up 150.2 million cubic feet of space—the size of four Empire State Buildings.[2] But it’s not just the vending machines that matter. The company achieves its global reach with local focus because of the strength of the Coca-Cola system, which comprises more than 250 bottling partners worldwide. Coca-Cola manufactures and sells concentrates, beverage bases, and syrups to bottling operations, while it owns the brands and is responsible for consumer brand marketing initiatives. Bottling partners manufacture, package, merchandise, and distribute the final branded beverages to customers and vending partners, who then sell Coca-Cola products to consumers. All bottling partners work closely with customers—grocery stores, restaurants, street vendors, convenience stores, movie theaters and amusement parks, among many others—to execute localized strategies developed in partnership with Coca Cola.[3]

What does this marketing mix result in for Coca Cola? The Coca-Cola brand is worth an estimated $83.8 billion. That’s more than Budweiser, Subway, Pepsi, and KFC combined.[4]

Summary

This chapter covered the marketing mix in depth and the strategies companies use to develop effective marketing plans. Below is a summary of the topics covered in this chapter.

Product Marketing

Product is the core of the marketing mix. Product defines what will be priced, promoted, and distributed. If you are able to create and deliver a product that provides exceptional value to your target customer, the rest of the marketing mix is easier to manage. A successful product makes every aspect of a marketer’s job more effective.

Pricing Strategies

When businesses make decisions about pricing, they can adopt profit-oriented pricing, competitor-oriented pricing, or customer-oriented pricing. Customer-oriented pricing focuses on the price-value equation: Value = Perceived Benefits – Perceived Costs. In order to increase value, the business can either increase the perceived benefits or reduce the perceived costs. Today’s marketing tends to favor customer-oriented pricing because it prioritizes the customer and the customer’s perception of value.

Place: Distribution Channels

Distribution channels cover all the activities needed to transfer the ownership of goods and move them from the point of production to the point of consumption. These activities can be organized as five important channel flows: product flow, negotiation flow, ownership flow, information flow, and promotion flow. While channels can be very complex, there is a set of channel structures that can be identified in most transactions: the direct channel, the retail channel, the wholesale channel, and the agent channel.

Promotion: Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC)

There are many different marketing communication methods that can be used in the promotion mix. Integrated marketing communication is the process of coordinating all the promotional activity across these different methods. In this course you learned about seven common marketing communication: advertising, public relations, personal selling, sales promotion, digital marketing, direct marketing, and guerrilla marketing.

6 Principles Happy Entrepreneur

As one of the biggest producers of black entrepreneurs, what’s one of the biggest challenges that your clients face?

Figure out where the time is going now! Try tracking your time for a week. You can use an app, a spreadsheet, or a notebook. Without knowing where the time goes, it’s hard to know if you’re changing the right things. Maybe something you think is a problem isn’t. Or vice versa.

You think lots of people have blind spots with time — even you! What are some of those?

Like many entrepreneurs, our clients are dedicated to making both a difference and a dollar. They have big business goals, and they’re dedicated to reaching those goals. This isn’t a problem on its own. However, we’ve seen a lot of entrepreneurs sacrifice their health, relationships, and well-being to realize those goals. This seems like a worthy sacrifice to many entrepreneurs, but there are often unintended consequences. The first is that they end up making what should be a short term sacrifice turn into a way of living. They end up feeling unhappy and under pressure, and it’s difficult to turn it around without some major changes.

What kind of unintended consequences do these entrepreneurs face? How does this affect their business and life?

The big consequence is that an entrepreneur can fall into the trap of living out of the need of immediacy, and not out of abundance. What we mean by that is, they’re constantly putting out fires. Because the entrepreneur has ignored some vital areas of life and business, they’re now spending their time focusing on what needs to get done “now” just for the survival of their business, health, relationships, etc. This isn’t a good place to operate from. And this is what ultimately leads to unhappiness. That’s why we’ve created The Happy Entrepreneur.

What’s the idea behind the Happy Entrepreneur?

The Happy Entrepreneur is a movement that’s based on one big idea: the results that show up in our lives are just as important as those that show up in our business. Too many entrepreneurs get stuck focusing only on their business and ignoring their personal lives. Not only does this lead to unhappiness, but it also means that the success we see in our business will ultimately be limited.

How does someone determine whether they’re ignoring their personal lives, or if they’re just doing what’s necessary and making sacrifices along the way?

1st start out by doing an assessment of your time.  In 1st column, list all of your priorities, including your family; 2nd column share how long it will take, 3rd when you will do it.  If you find that your priorities are written, but not included with a deliverable, then they are simply wishes.  Now you can recalibrate your priorities that include the things that mean the most to you and eliminate unnecessary tasks.

How would someone use The Happiness Scale?

Each week, you’ll commit to doing an equally positive action in both business and life. For example, you may decide that working out is a priority in your personal life. In your business, maybe speaking with 5 prospective clients is a priority. If you decide those should be paired (because they’re equally important), you’ll commit to doing them both as a pair and assign a point value to them. If you complete the pair, you get those points. If you don’t do either task, you don’t get any points. If you do one but not the other, you get negative points. The goal is to exceed 100 points each week, for as many weeks as possible.

How does a small business owner find the time to get through their entire to-do list and still spend so much time on their personal lives?

That’s where a lot of entrepreneur’s struggle. They lack time and energy to get it all done. And usually, our personal lives are the first to suffer. The Happy Entrepreneur focuses on 6 core principles designed to rescue our time back, to include:  systems, automation, and collaboration among other tools to make this happen.

What are the 6 core principles and how do those principles help us rescue our time back?

The six core principles are systems, automation, collaboration, people, processes, and performance. When used together, these principles help us get more done in less time

What’s the biggest challenge with utilizing these 6 core principles?

Any time we implement a new system; we’ll experience challenges at first. The biggest challenge here is understanding that “The answer to who doesn’t always have to be you.” That is, just because something needs to get done in your business or life, doesn’t mean you have to personally take the time to do it. For example, automation can handle a lot of your sales and marketing. Collaborations can help your business grow. People on your team can handle daily tasks. Once you accept that you don’t have to personally handle every detail, you’ll start to rescue your time and have a lot more choices for what you do with that time. We prefer to use it to get our lives back and work on leaving our legacy.

Can you talk more about leaving a legacy?

Legacy can really refer to anything you want to leave behind. Maybe you’re building a community. Maybe you want to leave your family wealth. Maybe you want to write a book, or impact a group of people. Whatever it is, you’ll never have time if you’re constantly living out of the need of immediacy. Your legacy will never feel urgent until it’s too late.

You mentioned that People is a core principle. What can someone do if they can’t afford to build a team?

Building a team is just one way to use the power of people. First, it’s important to acknowledge that help come in all shapes and sizes. In your personal life, you might get creative and find friends or family to help in exchange of something that isn’t money (an exchange of favors, possibly). In business, you don’t have to hire a full time employee to get help. Look at working with a professional for one time projects, or hiring an assistant that works a couple hours a week for recurring admin tasks. This principle is also tied to collaboration – meaning, you can collaborate with piers to work out a win-win.
