The End of Customer Service (As We Know It)

The End of Customer Service (As We Know It)

Time Magazine’s online edition claims customer service is going away. If we are to believe a recent article in Time, before long we’ll be self-servicing ourselves in every way imaginable from grocery checkout, to hospital check-in, from computer trouble shooting to phone bill and credit-card problem resolution.

The article points to retail trends started by the Piggly Wiggly grocery store way back in 1916. (They had the audacity to suggest customers pick their own items from grocery store shelves rather than wait for a clerk to do it for them.) Since then self-service gas stations have become the norm. Many stores now offer self-service checkout lanes and, in theory, we can resolve almost any service issue with our cell phones, insurance and credit-cards just by pressing a few buttons on our phones.

But does this signal the end of customer service? No, I don’t think so.

What we’re seeing is a change in how customers are served. For some the change is a vast improvement. I’d much rather save time and do a few things myself than wait for a clumsy and inattentive clerk to do it for me. But for others, these changes are not desirable. Many people approach self-service checkout lanes with a fear normally reserved for fun events like root canals.

With new technology comes new ways of thinking. It also fosters changes in our culture that make us willing to accept (even look for) different ways of doing things. For example, as our society has gotten busier, we have tended to prefer faster service from many businesses. And the business world has responded with drive-through, drive-up and drive-in service from burgers to banks, from pies to pills.

So while I agree customer service is changing (and not always for the better) I disagree that it’s going away.

Smart companies are using their knowledge and technology to serve us better. They are finding ways to serve us how we want to be served. Rather than relying on old habits (because we’ve always done things that way), they are trying new things to help us get what we want. For the most part, this is a good thing.

But not always.

If companies are making changes in how they serve us just so they can save money, they will fail. If their intention is solely to reduce costs (by shifting them to their customers), then they’ll have problems. They’ll fail because they are focusing on the wrong thing. You can’t grow a healthy and sustainable business by focusing on cost-reduction. All these companies are doing is manipulating their customers. This never works for long.

On the other hand, if businesses use their resources to make life better for their customers, they will win. If they make changes in how they serve us, with the intention of serving us better, then we’ll respond in a good way. We’ll do more business with them.

Because they’re focusing on serving us better, they’ll make changes that help us. They’ll talk to us about what we want and how they can help us get it. They’ll listen. And they’ll constantly wrap their businesses around the mission of serving their customers they way they want to be served.

Having a Website Created? Make Sure You Have Access to Your Files!

Having a Website Created? Make Sure You Have Access to Your Files!

A recent post on one of the message boards I frequent really bothered me, and I wanted to pass along this tip for those of you who are considering having a website designed for your company.

The designer/programmer or company that you hire to create your website will create a set of files that will be placed on your hosting control panel when the site is up and live. These files may be written in html, php or some other language, but they are the files that make what you see on your computer screen your site.

The woman on the message board had hired a company to design her site and asked this company to remain on after the site went live to make changes necessary to the site’s functioning. For instance, maybe she wants to update some content or products each month but she’s not tech savvy so she hires a designer to maintain the site. Oftentimes clients will hire the original designer, particularly if they build a strong relationship during the design aspect.

This woman was told by the company after the site design that she was going to be unable to access these files on her own to make changes.

Whether or not she knows what she is doing, she should always have control of any file that was created for her company that she paid for, and this is the lesson I’m passing on to you.

When you are hiring a graphic or web designer to create something for your business, be it a flyer, brochure, web design or logo, make sure that upon completion of that product you get a working file to take with you. You never know what might happen: the company may go under, the designer may get married and have kids and stop working for a while or you may simply lose touch with the person who created your pieces.

If you do not have a working file for these products you will never be able to make changes to them. So while you may love your logo now, take it from me: In a few years, if you are like me, you may want to make a slight change (I think I redesign my website every six months!)

The flyer may be great for the services you offer now, but down the road you may need to change a price or a product or service. Without a working file (or the file that was created in the original program the designer used-for instance, Photoshop CS3 if it is a graphic perhaps), then you’ll never be able to make a change.

This woman paid her website designer to create a site for her business. She deserves to have access to everything, whether she knows what it is or not!

Always make sure you have working files as well as access to anything that is placed on your site.

Unfortunately I’ve heard of a lot of strange things happening when it comes to website design, hosting and other marketing materials, so I’m going to spend some time posting about these in an effort to tell you what to AVOID when you are spending money to grow your company.

Side Business Ideas – Part II

Side Business Ideas – Part II

Home » Business Ideas » Side Business Ideas – Part II
July 16, 2013 Ervin Quinto Business Ideas Tags: business ideas, side business, side business ideas
In a previous article we were discussing the possibility of finding side business ideas to help you make some extra money. We promised we would come up with some new ideas, and here we are. Like we mentioned before, these ideas are suitable both for people with a day job, as well as for college students or stay at home parents who want to help with household finances. The great thing about these jobs is that they require few or no studies, very little or no start up money and no running around for authorizations and certifications.

Furthermore, these side business ideas are just suggestions, and perhaps they will serve to inspire you to have your own successful ideas. All you have to do is figure out what you are best at, and what your skills and talents are; once you realize what those advantages are, you can use them to help your community, and to offer your products or services starting with friends, neighbors and so on, until word is spread around about your business. That being said, here are the side business ideas that we propose today:

Childcare services – This is a great idea for those who love children and for those who already have children of their own. If you have extra space in your house, and a beautiful yard where the kids can play, you can use your skills as a mom or dad to help out others as well. Normally, there shouldn’t be a need for too many authorizations, and if you get some support from your local community and parents who would be interested in keeping their children at your day care, you should be able to open up this small business. The start up investments won’t be that large either, you just have to provide the children with sanitary facilities, toys, and prep your house with safety locks and other safety measures.
Bed and breakfast – This business idea is again ideal for those with free space in their house; you will need some authorizations and perhaps independent assessors to rate your establishment, but most of all you need the energy and dedication required in the service industry. However, keep in mind that you need to have the market for such an endeavor; the business would be much more successful if you live in a beautiful or touristic area, where people always come for certain attractions. You also need to provide your guests with various services such as sanitary facilities, fresh linens and towels, breakfast, tourist information and so on. If this is something that interests you, go to your local council today and find out what conditions you have to meet.
Catering – There are two ways to do this; first of all, you need to be a very good cook, and you need to be able to cook versatile meals, not just what you and your family enjoy. Thus, it would be good if you got feedback from objective people as well. You can offer catering services in that you can prepare meals for smaller events such as birthdays, or family events; another option would be to become a part-time chef. The stakes are a bit raised here however, because you would have to come up with something really special, and be able to cook special items that your customers may require.
Closet organizer – More and more people employ professionals to help them organize their closets and wardrobes. If you have a knack for this job, you too can become a closet organizer. You need to be very good at organizing spaces of all kinds, and even be able to recommend various types of furniture to your customers. This means doing your own research and finding out more about space optimization.
Cleaning services – No job is shameful as long as it good, honest work. Some people simply haven’t the time or the talent to do a good job of housekeeping, so they pay others to do it for them. Anyone with good physical condition and some free time should be able to perform this task, but the trick is to make a respectable reputation for yourself. This shouldn’t be very difficult if you are a likeable, sociable person who’s got friends to recommend them.
Handy man – If you know a bit about plumbing, house maintenance, electricity and other aspects of maintaining and repairing things around the house, you can offer your services to the community. Your advantage would be that you charge less than established companies that have larger costs, and your clientele would built itself up if people are satisfied with your work.
Tutoring – This is one of those jobs that students often get into, but even stay-at-home parents can do it. If you know a second language, mathematics or some other subject thoroughly, you can give private classes in your home or at your pupils’ homes. The downside is that it doesn’t pay much, but if you’re good at what you do you can get more and more customers.
Elder care – One of the most important things in life is to give back to your community and help others. Luckily, you can even make some money in the process, such as offering care services for older people. There are many elders out there with no family to take care of them, and without the means of living into a full-time center; you can help them around the house, do their shopping, even cook for them and so on, depending how far you are willing to go.
As you can see, there are so many side business ideas out there that anyone can find something profitable to do in their spare time. The only requirement is that you mustn’t be afraid of a little hard work, and your efforts will be rewarded.

Kinderdance International is a learning and dance studio established by Carol Kay Harsell in 1979.It gradually developed into a program with developmental dance, motor skills, gymnastics, music and fitness lessons as combined with children’s academic contents to invite in more prospective clients. They specifically cater for young learners from ages 2 to 12. With its growing number of enrolling children, they have decided to widen their wings by welcoming franchisees to spread their legacy among young boys and girls. And so since 1985, Kinderdance have started accepting franchisee applicants. They are seeking franchisees nationwide and other exclusive territories.
To be able to start a Kinderdance franchising business, you must be ready to invest a total amount of $14,950 to $46,100. When you have agreed already with the set contract by the company, you must pay their franchising fee amounting to a minimum of $12,000 and a maximum of $40,000. Expect to pay 5% of your total sales to the company for the on-going royalty fee. Their contract will be valid for ten years, and may be renewable upon your decision.
For you to be a qualified franchisee, you must have a total net worth of $10,000. Also, you must have liquefied cash amounting to $6,400. Kinderdance International is looking for applicants that have innate love for handling young learners, are able to do multi-tasking, are enthusiastically active, and have had sales and marketing experiences.
You may operate your franchising unit at your home as long as you have enough space and a environment conducive for learning. You will also be encouraged to have additional franchising units under Kinderdance, when the company has seen that you are operating and managing the business excellently. As a matter of fact, 3 percent of the company’s franchisees have more than one franchising units. You will only need one to two employees in one franchising unit to be able to start operation. The company is strictly implementing the rule that they do not allow absentee ownership of the franchising unit. Thus, they want to see you to be a hands-on owner and operator of the franchising unit to ensure its growth.
Once you already have your own franchising unit, you have all the right to upgrade your application by increasing in the number of locations and additional services and responsibilities. With just a small amount to be paid to the company, you may be handling several units across the country. Their levels in proper order and value are as follows: Bronze at $12,000; Silver at $20,000; Gold at $30,000; and Gold Plus at $40,000.
The training will be held in their headquarters. You will also be called for annual conferences to have further education on different relevant skills. Each conference will last for three days. Throughout your business experience with Kinderdance you will receive enough support from the company. You will be updated of the current trends and issues in the business to keep you informed at all times. There will be meetings provided for the franchisees regarding the company for further development. You can also reach them through their toll-free phone lines and website for more inquiries and suggestions. They will be with you even on your Grand Opening Day. And to make it more complete, they will have occasional visits in your location for safety and security procedures with the company’s representatives and purchase cooperatives.

Several organizations in and around the world can certify that organic blueberry farming is harmless to the environment and that it can improve or preserve soil fertility, farm sustainability and soil makeup. In this article, you can learn several methods that clearly support organic farming in the United States. These major methods include Certified Organic, Conventional Farming, Naturally Grown and Certified which can prove that blueberries are well suited to organic growing as they only have few enemies.

Certified Organic or Organic

Organic certification is a certain process that aims to certify producers who’s into food labeled and agricultural products. The term “organic” is mainly used by the government to certify organically grown crops. Actually, organic production falls under the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA), wherein organic foods comply with the rules and standards set by the Federal Regulations. It can however, involve extensive and expensive record keeping which can be too expensive for small farmers but still practical because organic methods are used to grow crops. In fact, you are not allowed to market product labeled crops until unless you are certified by the National Organic Program of USDA.

Conventional

Apart from Certified Organic, conventional farming is another method used in the United States for growing blueberries. This method is not too harsh in the environment as well as in chemical agriculture. Small farms in across the earth are using chemicals moderately while following guidelines under the care of environmentalists.

Naturally Grown

Naturally Grown has clearly initiates for organic practices in terms of growing their products; however, some farms do not apply Certified Naturally Grown as mentioned above. Farmers are producing crops using organic methods but they don’t use the term “organically grown”. In some cases, restrictions when growing products may be too restrictive to some growers. Like for example, either toxic or non-toxic chemical is not allowed to be manufactured and used. This is a good policy but in some instances, it can be restrictive in day-to-day application.

On the other hand, Ammonium sulfate is available only in the form of a mineral called mascagnite, which is found in volcanic fumaroles. Since it is manufactured, many farmers are not permitted to use the mineral because it’s under the category of manufactured product.
Certified Naturally Grown

The fourth among the methods that support blueberry farming includes the Certified Naturally Grown (CNG). This program is a non-profit process that mainly provides farmers with less-expensive alternative to organic certification. This is based on the National Organic Program but only it includes more access on pasture requirements and better livestock circumstances. However, CNG is not an endorsed and regulated program by the said organization.

More so, CNG was created to guarantee all customers that the products have strictly passed the growing practices.

This is the reason why a business centered to recycling is definitely a hit nowadays in America. If you would like to earn money and to serve as an advocate for preserving the beauty of our plant, one of the great options you can consider is venturing into the metal recycling business.

Scrap metal recycling is a big help for industries which make use of metals nowadays because it takes blood and sweat in order to get and to process metals. With this, a certain man who has a metal recycling business can have the chance to earn great profits. Two of the most common metals which can easily be recycled and make profit from are copper and aluminum because they are so abundant. The following are some of the things which can boost your recycling business: steel rods, car parts and washing machines that are junk.
How to Start Your Own Metal Recycling Business
In this kind of business, it is not just enough that you have the know-how and skills in recycling but the ability to hunt for junk materials as well. In this regard, you need to find the right place where you will locate metals to be recycled. But this can be a hard task to do especially if you don’t have budget yet to pay for labor expenses. So the best thing to do is talk to your friends, neighbors and relatives about your business. By doing this, they will be able to sell you their scrap metals and while you earn for that, they will also be paid back. Another benefit of this kind of business to them is reducing their clutters at home. Just imagine that because of your metal recycling operations, you can also help clean the environment. By simply using your communication skills, you can already tell them to tell others of what kind of service you provide. Through this, you no longer have to think about on how to advertise your business.
You also need to get to know the repair shops in your area because this will pave the way for you to have more profits since they generate large amount of metals. Some of the best resource persons whom can be great help to you are landscapers, electricians and metal-plumbers.
In starting off with your business, the following are the needed things: SUV or truck, advertising flyers and gloves. When you have saved large amount of money for hiring employees, your business will surely grow. If selling music online gets tougher with you then we will give you some useful tips on how to sell your music using the internet plus the right venues where you can sell them.Selling Music Online for Independent Music Artists
The music industry is so broad where most of the successful solo artists and bands are coming from large recording studios and recording companies. Because these studios and companies have the money to advertise and promote the albums of their artists, they became more popular in the industry. In spite of this, there is small independent music artists are also thriving for their dream to let everybody hear their music even they lack of capital for expensive advertising in radios and televisions; and this is by selling their music through the use of the internet.
The usual pitfall of an independent music artist is not getting the right venue for their music to be shared to the listening public. Due to the advance technology at this present time, people have now easy access to copy the songs even at their own home, which really hurts the music industry as a whole. As a result, some legitimate recording companies including the small independent music artists have stopped producing songs as they are afraid of losing their money and efforts. Nevertheless, due to the copyright law, the music industry is now protected against those profiteers and abusive individuals who keep on stealing the works of others. Online music sellers have now the opportunity to sell their songs without any wearies on their heads. In relation to this, here are some good pointers on how to sell your music online.
Good Pointers on How to Sell Music Online
Selling your music using the internet technology would be easy if you follow our simple pointers. As an independent music artist, you don’t need a huge capital to sell your songs to the public and make advertisements just to promote your music. There is a huge bunch of online music retailers as a venue for selling your recorded songs and even an album collection. But before you go on selling your music, make it sure that it has a good digital quality. Buyers are looking for music with good sound qualities, so therefore record your music with a good recording studio to achieve high quality music products. And also, put them on the right format like MP3’s, WMA, and other music formats that can enhance the quality of the music.
Furthermore, before submitting it to the online music retailers make certain that all of your music have copyrights on it. This will serve as a protection for your songs and will serve as a proof that the music is originally yours. Once you’re done, you can now sell it to the online retailers like CD Baby, The Orchard, or CD Bathtub.

It can benefit many people too.Tips when Locating
The process of leasing a farm depends on the negotiation and agreement of two parties involving factors like the area of the land, location, and how it will be use. So, first you must determine how you will use the land you will be buying. Determine whether you will use it for hunting or for farming. For example, if you will use the land for farming then it is necessary that the land is adjacent or even near the existing plots of farms since there are farm machineries and equipments needed for moving easily. If the land will be used for hunting then you should consider the size area of the plot and the availability of the games and the properties that surround it.
You can refer and search on the internet as well as the local newspaper to locate farm lands for lease. You can also talk with the local seed and feed suppliers or agricultural suppliers for locating a farm land available for leasing. Then contact the owners and determine if the farm land is still available and ask information about the lease terms of the lands. This will make you determine if the farm land is suitable to your needs. Arrange the time to visit and at the same time evaluate the land.
Meet the owner of your chosen land and evaluate carefully is the land fits your intended purpose for it. If you will use the land for hunting then consider the adjoining properties or the surrounding properties in regards to the development. Furthermore, look for signs that the land is a good property for hunting. If you intend to use the land for farming then look for sufficient drainage, good accessibility for the equipment and machineries, etc. Last but not the least is to clarify all issues and make sure that both parties agreed to the terms and agreement. Provide a written contract for authentication and signs of both parties.
Reminders
To be able to not encounter problems in the future, you should follow the lease agreement and do not stray outside of what you both agreed upon. Do not conduct any activity that is not within the lease agreement. Keep in mind that leasing is different from purchasing. Leasing means that the land is still owned by the other party so take care of it and operates within what is written in the lease agreement.
