Self-belief

If you go into a selling situation and you do not even believe in yourself, then you are doomed to failure. If you do not believe in yourself then the customer will not believe in you either, nor will they believe what you say. Your doubt will become their doubt and doubt does not lead to the sale.

Informed optimism
Blind belief is not always a good thing. Being positive because you have studied the product and the customer is greater reason to be confident. Belief and optimism provide powerful support but they do not replace factual knowledge.

If you are ready to sell, with good information at your fingertips, them you have good reason to be optimistic. Even if you do not have complete information (and who does), a tendency to optimism also helps create a positive attitude.

Can-do
Finally, self-belief and an optimistic approach lead to a ‘can-do’ attitude which means you will get out there and create the sale through your thoughts and actions. Belief is not enough: you’ve got to put in the work too.

Pride
There are two forms of pride. As one of the seven deadly sins, it can be a very selfish thing. But pride placed outside yourself is an important attitude that communicates and transmits itself to your customers.

Pride in the company
First, you should be proud to work at your company. Associating yourself with the brand and the brand values should make you feel good. You should be happy to tell others where you work.

Pride in the product
Secondly, you should be proud of what you are selling. Just thinking that you have the privilege of selling such a fine product should make you very happy indeed.

As with pride in the company, an intrinsic pride in the product is a powerful motivator, both for you and for your customer.

Care
Finally, a selling attitude is a caring attitude. Rather than just dump products on customers, if you want them to ever come back again, you should care about them and their problems, and hence be proud of how your products will help.

Care for customers can include taking time out from the normal selling context to check up on them, that the product is working ok and that they are happy with it. It can even include sending them Christmas and birthday cards — to their partner too.

When others know that you care about them, personally, then they will be far more willing to trust you — and trust is the first doorway towards selling.

A Day in the Life of an Activations Manager

No one could ever accuse life in activations of being boring. In fact, that is one of the things I love most about my job – every day is different, even activations we have done many times have enough variables for things to be completely different each time. There is something very special about taking the smallest nugget of an idea or brief from client, and managing its development through to the big day – ACTIVATION DAY!

There is always so much excitement the day before an activation. We hope that all the months of planning result in something truly wonderful for our clients and that they get the return on investment that they hope for.

 

So as we settle in for a (restless) night’s sleep, we await the morning…

 

04:00 – Alarm goes off.

 

04:10 – Snooze alarm goes off, get out of bed.

 

05:00 – Leave home.

 

05:15 – Fetch promoters at the office.

 

05:30 – Fetch last 2 promoters at another general point, as they couldn’t get to the office in time due to no public transport at this hour.

 

05:40 – We are on our way!

 

06:30 – Arrive at destination XYZ.

 

06:35 – Find site manager, introduce myself, and find out where to set up.

 

06:45 – Manage our amazing Ops Team in setting up an assortment of Bedouin tents, gazebos, giant inflatables, table, branding, banners, etc.

 

07:00 – While this is going on, I need to round up my promoters. I will assign them to their posts, ensure that they are in optimal condition to offer their very best service to us and the client!

 

08:00 – By now the set-up is pretty much complete, bar a few changes that might need to be made, or crises to be averted – generator won’t start, weather issues, a vital piece of equipment in the wrong vehicle, etc.

 

08:30 – It is go time – the activation is about to start. Why does it feel like I have had a full day already?

 

09:00 – Time for me to grab a cup of coffee. First time I’ve had a minute to myself all day! This is when I usually work out a break schedule for my hard-working promoters. To ensure that they remain energetic and enthusiastic all day, we need to ensure that they are drinking enough water and that they have at least 1 break to eat a hearty meal.

 

09:00 – 15:00 – The activation is in full swing. The promoters are on top of their game, running the activation exactly how they were trained. This is why we insist on using promoters that have not only been through our training academy, but also attended an activation specific briefing the week before the activation. This eliminates any confusion on the day.

A prepared team is a well-oiled team.

The less margin for error we have, the more successful the activation on the day. As the Activations Manager, my job is to manage any consumer queries that are out of the ordinary, settle any issues that may arise and ensure that the activation area is spotless and professional all day. I am also there to interact with the client should they wish to visit the activation on the day. The Ops Team is at the ready all day – they are there to replenish stock, supply giveaways, maintain the cleanliness of the area and assist with any heavy lifting. They are usually available on a 2 way radio, which is most effective for a busy activation where cell phone network connectivity could be compromised.

 

15:00 – This is when the Ops Team start to evaluate how much stock and giveaways they are bringing out. With just a few hours of the day left they need to make sure we have enough supplies at the ready, but not too many to make packing up a big deal.

 

16:00 – This is when we the team gets a powerful surge of energy before the completion of the activation. This is the time to really push the activation objectives, and ensure that we have reached EVERYBODY that we possibly could have. This is the make-or-break time of the activation!

 

17:00 – Time to pack up. By now, the whole team has really bonded over the course of the day. Everyone gets stuck in to ensure a quick, efficient set down. Once all the small elements are packed away, promoters go to change out of their uniforms, with the Ops Team tackling the big elements.

 

18:00 – The site is empty, the sun has gone down, and it is time for me to find the event organizer, offer my thanks for a great day, and get out of there.

 

19:30 – Drop promoters off at home/at the office for their transport.

 

20:00 – Arrive home exhausted, wind-swept, possibly sunburnt, but with a feeling of great accomplishment. Once I have soaked my weary bones and had a bite to eat, I fall into bed with a happy heart and enjoy a well-earned rest.

 

Depending on the duration of the activation, that alarm may be set for 04:00 for tomorrow again!

One often hears the following standard complaint of small businesses: bankers lend money only to those businesses that do not need the money. The inverse of this complaint from the bank’s standpoint might be that small businesses request money only when they are least likely to be able to repay it. The conflict between small businesses and bankers may stem from a misunderstanding of the respective roles of both groups. At face value, it might appear—particularly to small businesses—that bankers are investing in their companies.

Under normal conditions, bankers are extremely risk averse. This means they are not investors anticipating a substantial return predicated on the risks associated with a particular business. Bankers lend money with the clear expectation that they will be repaid both principal and interest. It is in the interest of both parties to transcend these two conflicting perceptions of the role of bankers in the life of a small business. The key way is for the small business owner to try to foster improved communications with a banker. This communication promoted by the small business owner should become the basis of a solid working relationship with the bank. Most often, this means developing a personal relationship with the loan officer of the bank, which is sometimes a problematic proposition. Bank loan officers are often moved to different branches, or they may change jobs and work for different banks. It should be the responsibility of the small business owner to maintain frequent contact with whoever is representing the bank. This should involve more than just providing quarterly statements. It should include face-to-face discussions and even asking the officer to tour a business’s facilities. Although bankers and loan officers will rely heavily on data related to the creditworthiness of a small business, they will also consider the trustworthiness and integrity of the business owner. This intangible sense that a business owner is a worthy credit risk may play a determinant role in whether a loan is approved with the extension of a credit line. This notion of integrity has to be built over time. It is predicated on projecting an image that you can be counted on to honor what you say, know the right thing to do to make the business a success, and be able to execute the correct decisions.

It is sometimes said that bankers, when reviewing a perspective loan applicant, think of the drink “CAMPARI,” which stands for the following:

  • Character. As previously stated, bankers will consider the issue of personal integrity. Part of that definition of integrity will include a sense of professionalism, which can be reflected in one’s attitude and dress. Bankers will also review one’s history as a business leader, namely one’s track record of success. This notion of character may also be extended to the upper echelon of the management team of a small business.
  • Ability. The bank’s prime concern is with repayment of the principal and the interest of a loan. The loan application should clearly demonstrate a business’s ability to repay the loan. All support materials should be brought to bear to prove to the banker that the loan will not be defaulted on and will be paid in a timely fashion.
  • Means. This refers to a business’s ability to function in a way so that it can repay the loan. Bankers must be convinced of this crucial point. The best way to do this is by providing a comprehensive business plan with detailed numbers that indicate the business’s ability to repay the loan. The business plan should also include the business strategy and the business model that will be employed to convince the banker of the validity of the overall plan.
  • Purpose. Bankers want to know for what purpose the borrowed money will be used. You should never request a loan with the argument that having more money is better for the business than having less money. You should clearly identify how the money will be used, such as purchasing a piece of capital equipment. Having done that, you should also indicate how the acquisition of the capital equipment will positively affect the bottom line of the business.
  • Amount. It would be extraordinarily inadvisable to begin a request for a business loan by saying “I need some money.” It is very important that you specify the exact amount of the loan and also justify how you determined this amount of money. As an example, you might want to identify a particular piece of capital equipment that you plan to acquire. How did you determine its price? You should be able to address what additional expenditures might be required—such as training on the use of the equipment. The greater the degree of precision that is brought to this proposal, the greater the confidence the bank might have in granting the loan.
  • Repayment. This refers to demonstrating an ability to repay both the interest and the principal. Again, detailed documentation, such as sales projections, profit margins, and projected cash flows, is essential if you wish to secure the loan. It is important when generating these data that you try to be as honest as possible. Extremely positive projections may be misleading. Worse still, if they are misleading and inaccurate, it may result in the business defaulting on the loan and perhaps losing the business.
  • Insurance. Even the most scrupulously developed sales and profit projections might not pan out. It would be extraordinarily useful to show contingency plans to the bank that would indicate how you would repay the loan in the event that the scenarios that you have identified do not come to fruition.

One should recognize that a good relationship with the bank can yield benefits above and beyond credit lines and business loans. Bankers can serve as interlocutors, connecting you to potential customers, suppliers, and other investors. A good working relationship with a bank can be the best reference a business could have. This is particularly true in the current business climate where bankers have significantly restricted lending to small businesses.

Given the success of the 2015 Grammy’s commercial spot, Target and Deutsch knew that they had to go even bolder in 2016. Enter Gwen Stefani and a cast of high-profile influencers. Stefani managed to pull off the first-ever live music video — an endeavor so complex that words fall short of capturing its level of difficulty.
