Who, within an organization, is responsible for creating its marketing plans? From our discussion above, you might think the responsibility lies with the organization’s chief marketing officer (CMO). The reality is that a team of marketing specialists is likely to be involved. Sometimes multiple teams are involved. Many companies create marketing plans at the divisional level. For example, Rockwell International has so many different business areas that each does its own strategic planning. The division responsible for military avionics, for instance, creates its own marketing plans and strategies separately from the division that serves the telecommunications industry. Each division has its own CMO.

Rockwell International’s many divisions serve a diverse set of industries, from military avionics and communications to consumer and business telecommunications. That’s why Rockwell develops marketing plans at the division level (business-unit level).

Some of the team members specialize in certain areas. For example, the copier company Xerox has a team that specializes in competitive analysis. The team includes an engineer who can take competitors’ products apart to see how they were manufactured, as well as a systems analyst who tests them for their performance. Also on the team is a marketing analyst who examines the competition’s financial and marketing performance.

Some marketing-analyst positions are entry-level positions. You might be able to land one of these jobs straight out of college. Other positions are more senior and require experience, usually in sales or another area of marketing. Marketing analysts, who are constantly updating marketing information, are likely to be permanent members of the CMO’s staff.

In some consumer-goods companies with many brands (such as P&G and SC Johnson), product—or brand—managers serve on their firm’s marketing planning teams on an as-needed basis. These individuals are not permanent members of the team but participate only to the extent that their brands are involved. Many other members of the firm will also participate on marketing planning teams as needed. For example, a marketing researcher is likely to be part of such a team when it needs data for the planning process.

Truly great storytellers like Apple, which has been identified as the top storytelling brand in the UK for the fourth year in a row, according to creative agency Aesop’s 2016 research, recognize that the most powerful stories happen in the mind of the audience, making every story unique and personal for the individual. Apple’s brand story—technology can be beautiful and human as well as functional—is clear in its storytelling about what it looks like for customers to successfully use Apple products. Apple’s TV spots for the iPhone 6S put its customers at the center of the story: the spots don’t linger on close-up shots of the iPhone and how sleek and pretty it is. They show relatable people using the iPhone to do cool things that make their everyday life more productive, entertaining, and connected. An emotional connection is what drives Apple consumers to be loyal. It explains why people sleep on the street, waiting for the latest iPhone release—not because the camera has been improved from 8-to 12-megapixels.

The ROI of Brand Storytelling

Research from co:collective looked at the impact of brand storytelling on the financial performance of 42 publically traded companies. It found brand storytelling to have a significantly greater impact on brand engagement than traditional advertising. This higher level of engagement led to increased ROI:

How Target Took Big Risks and Reaped Even Bigger Rewards

As competition increases and brands vie to stay relevant, the strategic dilemma brands are often faced with is one that transcends just the marketing industry: should I take a risk or should I go with a “safer” bet? However, as the old adage goes, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” While sometimes a safer bet seems like the most rational approach, some instances dictate taking risks —risks that, in turn, reap rewards that would’ve never otherwise been realized, helping differentiate the brand and grow mindshare.

Case in point: Target in their sponsorship of the Grammy’s. In 2015, armed with eight 30-second commercial spots, they wanted to pull a stunt that reinvigorated their brand and its ties to culture. With the help of creative agency Deutsch, they convinced CBS to place all of their spots in one, contiguous four-minute block. With that big commercial, though, they had to do something extraordinary.

Drawing upon their relationships with artists, Target chose to feature the band, Imagine Dragons, for their moment in the limelight. What followed was the first live advertisement, with Imagine Dragons performing during a commercial break in what appeared to be an extension of the award show itself. It wasn’t only a smashing success due to the countless media hits that were earned as a result, but it also created an entirely new genre of advertising.

Given the success of the 2015 Grammy’s commercial spot, Target and Deutsch knew that they had to go even bolder in 2016. Enter Gwen Stefani and a cast of high-profile influencers. Stefani managed to pull off the first-ever live music video — an endeavor so complex that words fall short of capturing its level of difficulty. Thanks to the incorporation of YouTube stars capturing the event and Easter eggs hidden throughout the video to stimulate social discussion, the campaign earned well over three billion impressions for Target and completely surpassed pre-order expectations for Stefani’s new album.

More important than just impressions, though, is what this means for the marketing industry as a whole. Target and all associated partners for the project undertook a huge amount of risk in both of these campaigns, but ultimately reaped major rewards by creating an experience as an advertisement.
