Social media uses technology and mobility to provide an interactive means of communication among people, organizations, and communities who are interconnected and interdependent. Many channels and vehicles are available for social media just as there are many different television shows and magazines. With changing technology, new vehicles are added frequently.

With over half of Americans participating in social networks, people and organizations who don’t participate may be at a disadvantage with some groups in society. Not only does the majority of the population in the United States have a profile on a social network, but at least one-third of those people access the sites multiple times a day. Not only is social media popular for keeping in touch with friends, but companies use social media to promote their brands and as a tool for recruiting and hiring. People follow companies and brands on social media, especially on Facebook, whereas LinkedIn generates more job referrals. Just as companies are allocating more of their promotion budget to social media, they are also increasing their expenditures on social recruiting.

Social media is complex and rapidly changing. While there is some overlap between personal and business, one way to improve the understanding of social media is to think about social media zones. Social media zones include social communities, social publishing, social entertainment, and social commerce. Think about the different ways you use social media and which zones you utilize. You probably use all of the zones.

Social communities are channels that focus on activities and relationships and include social networking sites (online hosts such as Facebook and LinkedIn), forums, wikis, and message boards, channels where you may already participate. Think about your profile. Whatever you type becomes a digital version of you. In social communities, you communicate and socialize with others. While you may share information with others, you must be careful how much and what information you choose to post.

Social publishing helps distribute information to different audiences and includes channels such as blogs (Web sites with content that is updated regularly) and media sharing sites with searchable content featuring videos (YouTube), photos (Flickr), and music (iTunes). Think about videos you may have posted. When companies pay to have product reviews posted or to promote contests or their brands, they may use social publishers to write blogs and generate word of mouth. Many companies are also posting their own commercials and other content on YouTube.

Opportunities for games and entertainment are part of the social entertainment zone. Social games like FarmVille, entertainment networks, action games, puzzle games, and reality games have increased revenues in the social gaming industry. Social gaming appears to be growing in popularity.

Do you remember talking about e-commerce? Well, the social commerce zone is part of e-commerce where people buy and sell products on the Internet. Social commerce provides a means for interactive shopping, including reviews, ratings, and social shopping Web sites where you can chat with merchant personnel or with friends while you are shopping. Geometry Global-Encompass Network launches new study R-Scape

The marketer who has been grappling in trying to understand who and what the rural consumer is all about may just have some help coming from the recently launched study ‘R|Scape’ that hopes to understand the elusive and yet the ubiquitous rural consumer and his behaviour. The study has been jointly undertaken and launched by Geometry Global- Encompass Network along with IIM-Ahmedabad, MaRs and Decision Point. While MaRS Monitoring and Research Systems is a full service research agency set up by former CEO of MARG Raghu Roy, Decision Point is a specialized consumer and retail analytics firm based in Gurgaon and founded by Ravi Shankar.

The ambitious research-study covers 6,000 rural consumers (near equal split of married men, married women, young men, young women), eight states (representative of all regions across India) and over 20 popular categories (deodorant, shampoo, hair oil, lipstick, toothpaste, talcum powder, shaving cream, after-shave lotion, cooking oil, toilet soap, fairness cream, detergent, utensil cleaner, floor cleaner, biscuit, tomato sauce, butter, jam, breakfast cereal, branded atta, shoe, denim, candy, seed, pesticide, banking, life insurance, mutual fund).

According to Rahul Saigal, Group COO, Geometry Global Encompass Network, “While everyone knows that rural consumers need to be treated or targeted differently, yet nobody’s doing much about it. Also, the smartphone phone penetration is reaching threshold levels and could become a potentially strong medium to serve personalised content.”

The study is relevant in the backdrop of the evolving rural consumer whose behaviour has been changing dramatically in the last few years thus underlying the need for him to be better understood by the marketer, media planner and the advertiser. The study hopes to help marketers transition smoothly from market to message and media as also help assess the differences between the rural and the urban consumer so that the brand positioning and advertising can be crafted accordingly and suitably.

Some of the top findings from the study include:

1) The rural consumer segmentation needs to be a function of adherence to village norms and urban centricity.

2) By-and-large, rural consumers are exhibiting lack of brand fidelity attitudinally as well as behaviorally.

3) Adherence to village social norms has created strong differentiation among rural married women.

4) Reasons for adoption and consumption of categories are very different for rural and urban consumers. Hence, the same brand positioning or advertising does not work across both markets.

5) Rural markets are not homogenous. Reasons to buy and consume categories are often starkly different for consumers from different regions.

Family values and shopping within the Hispanic community

The family that spends Thanksgiving dinner together goes Black Friday shopping together.

Recent findings of a study examining the Black Friday shopping habits of multicultural consumers show that non-white ethnicities, especially members of the Hispanic and Latino population, spend more money the day after Thanksgiving shopping for sales than Caucasian consumers and treat Black Friday as an extension of the holiday, shopping together on Thanksgiving day, as well as the day after.

The study from global shopper marketing agency Geometry revealed that multicultural shoppers, including Hispanic, Asian and African-Americans, spend 30% more money on Black Friday than Caucasians. In 2014, Hispanics and Asian Americans spent an average of $300; African-Americans, around $350; and Caucasians, just $250 on Black Friday, the study reported.

Multicultural shoppers, especially Hispanics and African-Americans, don’t plan their Black Friday purchases in advance. The study showed 41% of Caucasians made lists of items they wanted to purchase on Black Friday last year, compared to 32% of Hispanics and 28% of African-Americans.

Hispanics are more spontaneous shoppers than other cultural groups, explained John Burn, cross-cultural shopper marketing practice lead at Geometry Global, and are more “about living in the moment” when shopping. If they do plan, he said, at most it would be a day or two in advance, compared to Caucasians who could spend weeks planning their Black Friday purchases.

The multicultural consumer views Black Friday as an extension of the Thanksgiving holiday, the study found, with 50% of participants reporting that they go shopping on both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. The study, conducted two months ago, surveyed 606 people who have some responsibility over the household shopping to “understand how different ethnic groups shopped, where the commonalities and differences converged,” said Burn. The groups were nearly evenly represented, with 149 Hispanics, 156 African-Americans, 156 Asian-Americans, and 150 non-Hispanic white or Caucasians participating in the study.

Thanksgiving is a big celebration with friends and family, immediate and extended, and the Hispanic consumer’s desire to spend more time together during the holiday extends the family time to shopping on Black Friday, observed Burn and other multicultural marketing experts. Black Friday becomes an outing for the entire family, and they will spend the entire day shopping at big retailers like Toys “R” Us, Macy’s and Best Buy, said Daniel Ocner, director of strategic marketing and development at MediaMorphosis in Long Island City, N.Y.

“There’s no hesitation to go out shop on Black Friday because everyone just spent the entire day together,” added Manny Rodriguez, director of client services at CultureSpan Marketing in El Paso, Texas.”It’s not just a dinner thing, it’s a whole day family thing.”

Since they don’t make an exact list of items they want to buy on Black Friday, Hispanic customers tend to stay in shops longer to peruse other items they may want to purchase, Geometry Global’s Burn said. “Hispanics are more spontaneous in terms of planning, and once they’re in the store, they are more open to discovery, to browse the store and see what’s in there,” he said, so retailers should highlight their biggest deals with banners and posters in store.

The biggest items purchased on Black Friday by members the Hispanic community are electronics, especially tablets, smartphones, and televisions, the study found. They keep an eye out for the biggest discounts on items that would normally be too expensive for them to buy any other time of the year, Burn said.

Considering the increasing influence of the Hispanic population, brand marketers and retailers need to be savvy about how they market to Hispanics, stressed multicultural experts.”Brands should target them based on their culture and do something that would culturally resonate with them,” said Fernando Fernandez, partner and chief client officer at d expósito & Partners, New York. The Hispanic population, at about 55 million people, is the fastest-growing ethnic group in the U.S., making up about 17% of the population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The government agency projects that the Hispanic population will grow to nearly 130 million by 2060 and will represent 31% of the US population.
