Ethics in B2B Markets

4.6 Ethics in B2B Markets

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how the ethical dilemmas B2B marketers face differ from the ethical dilemmas B2C marketers face.
  2. Outline the measures companies take to encourage their employees and executives to act in ethical ways.

It’s likely that every topic we have talked about so far in this chapter has an ethical dimension to it. Take procurement, for example: unlike B2C markets, offering customers free dinners, golf games, and so forth is very common in B2B settings. In many foreign countries, business and government buyers not only expect perks such as these but also actually demand bribes be paid if you want to do business with them. And firms pay them, even though some countries prohibit them. (The United States is one such country.) Which countries have a penchant for bribery? In a report called the “Bribe Payers Index,” Transparency International, a watchdog organization, annually ranks the likelihood of firms from the world’s industrialized countries to bribe abroad. The top five countries are shown in Table 4.3 “Transparency International’s Bribe Payers Index”.

Table 4.3 Transparency International’s Bribe Payers Index

1. Russia
2. China
3. Mexico
4. India
5. Italy

Or take, for example, the straight-rebuy situation we discussed earlier. Recall that in a straight rebuy, buyers repurchase products automatically. Recently, Dean Foods, which manufactures the Silk brand of soy milk, experienced a lot of negative press after the company changed the word “organic” to “natural” on the labels of its milk, and quietly switched to conventional soybeans, which are often grown with pesticides. But Dean didn’t change the barcode for the product, the packaging of the product, or the price much. So stores kept ordering what they thought was the same product—making a straight rebuy—but it wasn’t. Many stores and consumers felt as though they had been duped. Some grocers dropped the entire Silk lineup of products (Waters, 2009).

And remember Intel’s strategy to increase the demand for its chips by insisting that PC makers use “Intel Inside” stickers? Recently Intel paid a competitor more than a billion dollars to settle a court case contending that it strong-armed PC makers into doing business exclusively with Intel. (Does that make you feel less warm and fuzzy about the “Intel Inside” campaign?)

What Dean Foods and Intel did might strike you as being wrong. However, what is ethical and what is not is often not clear-cut. Walmart has a reputation for using its market power to squeeze its suppliers for the best deals possible, in some cases putting them out of business. Is that ethical? What about companies that hire suppliers abroad, putting U.S. companies and workers out of business? Is that wrong? It depends on whom you ask. Some economists believe Walmart’s ability to keep costs low has benefited consumers far more than it has hurt the suppliers of products. Is it fair to prohibit U.S. companies from offering bribes when their foreign competitors can?

Clearly, people have very different ideas about what’s ethical and what’s not. So how does a business get all of its employees on the same page in terms of how they behave? Laws and regulations—state, federal, and international—are an obvious starting point for companies, their executives, and employees wanting to do the right thing. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) often plays a role when it comes to B2B laws and regulations. The FTC regulates companies in an effort to prevent them from engaging in unfair trade practices that can harm consumers and hamper competition.

Further, companies that sell to the government must, by law, follow very strict ethical guidelines. These companies tend to make such guidelines their policy because it is easier to make sure that the federal regulations are followed all of the time than only when selling to the government.

Companies are also adopting ethics codes that provide general guidelines about how their employees should behave. Many firms require employees to go through ethics training so they know what to do when they face tricky ethical dilemmas. Large corporations have begun hiring “chief ethics officers” to ensure ethics are properly implemented within their organizations. The Business Marketing Association has also developed a code of ethics that discourages bribery and other practices, such as disparaging a competitor’s products unfairly, and encourages treating one’s suppliers equitably.

Figure 4.12

Business Marketing Association (BMA) website screen shot

As for Walmart, you can’t fault the company’s procurement practices. Walmart’s purchasing agents aren’t allowed to accept a lunch, dinner, golf game, or so much as a cup of coffee from potential vendors. Walmart is not the only company to have implemented such a policy. More and more firms have followed suit because (1) they realize that perks such as these drive up product costs and (2) they don’t want their buyers making decisions based on what they personally can get out of them rather than what’s best for the company.

All things equal, companies want to do business with firms that are responsible. They don’t want to be associated with firms that are not. Why is this important? Because that’s what consumers are increasingly demanding. A few years ago, Nike and a number of other apparel makers were lambasted when it came to light that the factories they contracted with were using child labor and keeping workers toiling for long hours under terrible conditions. Nike didn’t own the factories, but it still got a bad rap. Today, Nike, Inc., uses a “balanced scorecard.” When evaluating suppliers, it looks at their labor-code compliance along with measures such as price, quality, and delivery time. During crunch times, it allows some Chinese factories latitude by, for example, permitting them to adjust when employees can take days off (Roberts, et. al., 2006).

Similarly, Walmart has developed a scorecard to rate its suppliers on how their packaging of products affects the environment (Arzoumanian, 2008). Walmart does so because its customers are becoming more conscious of environmental damage and see value in products that are produced in as environmentally friendly a way as possible.

Key Takeaway

Ethics come into play in almost all business settings. Business-to-business markets are no different. For example, unlike B2C markets, offering customers perks is very common in B2B settings. In many foreign countries, government buyers demand bribes be paid if a company wants to do business with them. Understanding the laws and regulations that apply to their firms is an obvious starting point for companies, their executives, and employees in terms of knowing how to act ethically. Companies are also adopting ethics codes that provide general guidelines about how their employees should behave, requiring their employees to go through ethics training, and hiring chief ethics officers. Companies want to do business with firms that are responsible. They don’t want to be associated with firms that are not. Why? Because they know ethics are important to consumers and that they are increasingly demanding firms behave responsibly.

Review Questions

  1. Name some of the types of ethical dilemmas facing firms in B2B markets.
  2. Why is it difficult for employees and firms to know what’s considered to be ethical behavior and what is not?

Small Business Most Important Thing

When I started my first company, I made a vow to myself that no one would be able to “outwork” me.  I believed that if I put more time into my business than my competition, it would make me successful.  I became the worst workaholic you could imagine.  I would actually leave church on Sunday–and then head into the office.  I worked 7 days a week and I created that culture for my employees, too.  You could call my office at 8pm and my assistant was still there answering the phone.  Now, I always bought lunch and dinner for my staff, but I didn’t have a life and neither did they.  And even though my company did well, I am not so sure it was because of all those hours at the office.

It is true that in the first couple of years your business, it really owns you.  But be careful not to give all of your energy to your business and completely neglect your family and friends.  Make a point to at least twice a week end your work day at a reasonable time.  There are too my entrepreneurs who are divorced, because they did not make their families their #1 customer.

Here’s a small quiz that will help you figure if you are on the road to burnout in your business.  Answer these questions Yes or No.

  • Do work long hours = 5 or more nights a week?
  • Do you prefer to be at a networking event instead of at home?
  • Do you know how to relax?
  • Do you still have a date night with your spouse?
  • Have you recently spent time hanging out with friends?
  • Do you still regularly do any of your hobbies?
  • Have you recently read a book for fun?

Your answers to these questions should make you think hard about what your top priority is for your life.

So, how did I finally stop devoting every waking hour to my business?
I was forced to take it easy when I became pregnant with my son.  Due to complications with my baby, I had a high risk pregnancy and was put on bed rest for 6 months.  I was forced to get a smart phone, and use technology more effectively. I was really only able to work 4-5 hours a day when I felt up to it. I had to delegate more and depend on my staff much more than I ever had. Once I had my son, I never returned to my workaholic ways.  I am now a family first entrepreneur. I figured out that my time is what my family needed most, if I wanted to have a family.

Are you a reformed workaholic? Tell me how you finally got your life back from your business?

Brand Small Business 2018

Every week as SmallBizLady, I conduct interviews with experts on my Twitter talk show #SmallBizChat. The show takes place every Wednesday on Twitter from 8-9 pm ET.  This is excerpted from my recent interview with Yali Saar, who is the is the CEO of Tailor Brands, an automated branding agency. He is a former creative for BBDO & Chief Creative Officer for Raising the Bar.  For more information:  www.tailorbrands.com.

SmallBizLady: As 2017 ends, why is it important that entrepreneurs create a strategic plan for the upcoming year?

Yali Saar: Influential branding can really make the difference between a small coffee shop failing or becoming a multibillion dollar franchise. Branding is really the difference between customers paying $5 or $15 for the sandwich you make. It’s a name, a reputation, an image that sticks with you and in some cases, it can even be a state of mind.

SmallBizLady: HOW CAN SMALL BUSINESSES AFFORD THIS HIGH LEVEL OF BRANDING?

Yali Saar: You’re right, good branding can be costly, and it’s hard to compete with the spending budgets of top tier brands. Like most businesses, they recognize this problem as “time + talent = money”, so they will need to decide to remove the time factor from this equation.

This is where automated design comes in, to level the playing field and allow small businesses to create unique and memorable branding. The solution – an algorithm that could “think” like a designer, essentially translating the world as a designer would see it.

SmallBizLady: WHAT EXACTLY IS AUTOMATED DESIGN?

Yali Saar: Automated design is the process in which a program enables us to mechanize design functions that we were previously performing manually. The machine-based learning algorithm creates a logo and design assets in a matter of minutes based on a series of preferences chosen by the user. A logo is really just a combination of a font, a typeface and a style, so once all elements are chosen by the user, the system can automatically generate the results.

SmallBizLady: HOW DOES THIS WORK FOR THE USER?

Yali Saar: A user will first input the name of their business and share a little bit about the nature of what they do. Then, the program starts a little game, trying to make the experience as similar to working with an actual designer. The user would be shown a couple of images refereed to “this or that”, pick their preferences based on style or font type. Users can also choose a specific icon, initial or structure for the design.  After a few questions, the system will generate about nine logos for the user to choose between. Once the logo is created, users can further customize the design and change certain elements so it matches what they had imagined.

SmallBizLady: WHY WOULD A SMALL BUSINESS CHOOSE AUTOMATED DESIGN INSTEAD OF HIRING A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

Yali Saar:  The beauty of an automated platform is that the system will utilize this design on all branded assets, eliminating paying extra for each item a la carte. The logo should become the basis of your marketing efforts and the advantage of using an automated service is that it can be easily transferred into different designs. All of your assets will become branded since you can seamlessly place your logo on business cards for each employee as they join, daily social posts for your Facebook page and a banner for your business at a tradeshow. Since automated design is a true technological output and becomes smarter each day, you can create all of these assets without relying on any templates in the background. It’s the combination of the quality and product range of an agency with the speed and price of an automated platform.

SmallBizLady: WHAT TYPE OF LOGO DESIGN DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR SMALL BUSINESSES WHO WANT TO CREATE A RECOGNIZABLE AND TIMELESS DESIGN?

Yali Saar: There are timeless logos and there are trends. I would recommend a plain text logo, or as it’s called a typography logo, since these type of designs are generally very timeless and never go out of style. Some logos that come to mind are Dior and the New York Times as these designs are comprised of just a simple yet elegant font.

SmallBizLady: WHAT KIND OF LOGO DESIGN SHOULD BUSINESSES AVOID WHEN DESIGNING THEIR BRANDING?

Yali Saar:  Avoid dynamic logos, which are logos that change every time you use them, confusing the customer and lacks consistency. Pick a logo that can withstand the years, and continue being timeless like the Ford logo while accepting updates without becoming completely transformed. A logo is something that you live with for a long time – you really have to take a hard look and decide, this is what I want to go with.

SmallBizLady: CAN YOU IDENTIFY ANY TRENDS WITHIN THE BRANDING AND DESIGN WORLD THAT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR USERS WHEN CREATING THEIR LOGO?

Yali Saar: Yes, the current trend is the simplification, i.e., understanding how recognizable a logo can be. Take the MasterCard logo as an example. In their latest rebrand, they changed their logo to just two circles, without the word MasterCard in the middle that they have had for years. The fact that people can just recognize the brand by seeing one circle in red and the other circle in yellow – that’s the aspiration of any brand.

SmallBizLady: HOW CAN BRANDING MAKE A SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL?

Yali Saar: It’s about recognizing the brand’s jingle, tagline or color scheme long after the advertisement is over or your car has passed the billboard. Successful branding is more than just a logo, it’s a process that extends to every aspect of your business. It is building strategy, keeping your social presence active and so much more. These things have always required large budgets, which sets a barrier of entry for many projects and small business out there. This is where automated branding comes in to really break down these barriers and give everyone with an idea a fair chance.

SmallBizLady: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS WHO ARE JUST GETTING STARTED?

Yali Saar: There are two points to remember. First, the brand and design should truly project what you’re trying achieve – what action you would like your customers to take or to acknowledge in the product that you’re setting forth. Secondly, stay consistent across your marketing material and brand message. Utilize the same language and maintain brand continuity across all platforms. This will allow your customers to identify you, become followers and eventually convert.

SmallBizLady: When should small businesses begin to grow their presence online?

Yali Saar: Immediately. When you’re building up any brand, the first line of defense towards your credibility is your online presence. Once customers are interested in your business, the first thing they will do is type your name on the web and search for your business. If you don’t appear there, any outreach or anything that you make, including any email that you have sent, is less credible. Even if you can’t start a website, just start a Facebook page with that logo and start posting there. It would give your project so much more credibility when you’re trying people are looking to connect with a business, and that is priceless

Employee Perk Ideas

1. Movie Ditch Day

Or bring the viewing out of the office and take the whole team to the newest Star Wars.  Or Marvel movie.  Or awards show weepie if your workplace is classy like that.  It’s a day of lost work you won’t get back.  But it’s a day of bonding you won’t want to trade.

2. Sponsored Desk Decorations

Budgeting money for desk decorations is another employee perk that brings art into the office.  And actually keeps it there.  Mostly because buying it yourself is a better quality guarantee than making it.

3. Party Planning Committee

To put the social power (and responsibilities) behind any of the above in employees’ own hands, a Party Planning Committee can be a vital employee perk.  Giving the office control over its own recreation tends to create the kind of recreation the whole office enjoys.  Funny how that works.

4. Seating Exchange

A seating exchange is the sort of employee perk that presents itself as a surface inconvenience, but tends to pay off in spades far more often than not.  Swapping around work areas, even one day a month, mixes up energies and mixes up office relationships, making the whole team slowly feel more familiar with each other.

5. Food Truck Lunches

Food truck lunches are another great way to support the community your office calls home, but it’s a way that instantly pays back.  Take a poll and book the truck of your coworkers’ choice even weekly, if you feel like going nuts.  Of all possible employee perks, it’s clearly the tastiest.  Click here to get started through Roaming Hunger.

6. Mini-Basketball Hoop

Or bring the gym to work.  It might look like child’s play, but a mini basketball hoop can do wonders for releasing angst that can’t wait until 5pm. Give your writers five minutes of mindlessness to regain their grammar, and your execs five minutes of aggression to regain their sense of control.

7. Employee Concierge

Help your coworkers make the most of those hours, wherever they fall in the day, with an employee concierge.  Think of it like a personal assistant spread out across the whole office.  Consider outside errands taken care of, and distractions swatted, giving the whole team freedom to focus.  Or if that’s too extreme, give everyone Task Rabbit credits to hire their own temporary assistants as needed.

8. Communal Video Games

If real life aggression’s a little too intense for the office, a shared video game system’s an employee perk offering most of the same benefits, with far less blocking.  Of course, sometimes Mario Kart can cause more arguments than a ball to the face.  So just be ready.

9. Employee-Selected Speaker Series

For interests that go deeper than the books themselves, bring employee-selected speakers to the office to give talks and seminars.  It’s an employee perk that takes personal knowledge and makes it communal.  And making it communal makes it stick around.

10. Dogs Welcome

Nothing accompanies Dalmatian onesies like a Dalmatian by the desk. Bringing dogs into the office provides instant stress relief, instant entertainment, and instant heart that’ll break everyone’s guard down. Assuming they’re not allergic.

11. Free Office Emergen-C

Of course, keeping the kitchen stocked with Emergen-C goes a long way towards helping with all that too.

12. Free Music Streaming

From Spotify to Apple Music to Tidal (okay maybe not Tidal), shared streaming services are a great way to help your coworkers focus and escape, all at the same time.  What’s more, encouraging shared playlists will help everyone in the office get to know each other’s tastes.  And influence each other’s tastes too.

13. Virtual Reality

For more of a solo employee perk, a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift can offer a welcome break from the office without ever really leaving it.  It might not do much for team-building, but it’ll do great things for building imagination, employee by employee.

14. Fantasy Sports League

Sponsoring an in-office fantasy league, on the flip side, IS just the kind of employee perk that inspires team building (by building teams, naturally).

15. Office Flatscreen

It goes without saying you can’t have an office fantasy league without a way to keep tabs. Communally. So you can hear all your coworkers’ sighs, moans and cries of agony as you (hopefully) slide up the rankings.

16. Tickets to Games

Or keep tabs in person. With a whole lot more yelling. And beer (of the non office draft system-variety, of course. Save that).

17. Sports League

Or maybe your fantasy game isn’t so hot. That’s okay. For an employee perk that’ll let you show off a more dynamic skill set, sign the company up for a soccer/flag football/heck even a dodgeball league.  It’ll help everyone who signs up bond.  Eventually.  After they’re done trying to pummel each other.

18. Yoga

For an office activity that embraces getting physical but leaves bravado by the way-side (in fact, it tends to actively decrease aggression), signing the office up for yoga – or better yet, offering it in-house, is an employee perk that quickly pays for itself in dividends.  Just make sure you’ve all got somewhere to shower after.

19. In-Office Massages

Or bring the tranquility to work, without the part that requires showering.  Drop-in massage services are everywhere these days, and easy to book as an employee perk that won’t just wipe the day’s stresses away, but should go a long ways toward preventing new ones.

20. Life/Career Coaching

Bringing in a life coach/career coach can massage out all the non-physical things weighing employees down, and leave them just as smoothed out once they’re done.  It’ll also make them more focused.  It’s an employee perk that’ll add a little purpose to your coworkers’ day; in fact the kind of little purpose that becomes very large once it all adds up.

21. Mental Health Allowance

Now if all the previous employee perks are appealing, but the prospect of doing them at work isn’t, a simple allowance for mental health gives employees the means to take care of everything above in private.  Whether it’s therapy sessions, or simply a spa day, wellness allowances help employees get well on their own time, and stay that way on work time.

22. Free Coffee

Same here. Except maybe more so.

23. Stocked Kitchen

If you’re looking to go full Google though, prep the kitchen to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It won’t just save employees money, it’ll give them an excuse to converge and eat together.  And if they wind up liking each other, you can label that just another employee perk.

24. TV Viewing Parties

For late-working workers taking advantage of that free dinner, go ahead and schedule viewing parties for some of your coworkers’ favorite shows.  From The Bachelorette to re-watching Battlestar Galactica, there’s a wide variety of ways to get the team watching together – then hopefully arguing together.

25. Concert Tickets

Conversely, grabbing regular seats for big concerts is a great employee perk for the team more into listening than looking.

26. Free Dropbox Premium

What’s more, signing everyone up for a free Dropbox Premium account will ensure everyone can share the rare album that isn’t currently being streamed with each other.  Along with documents and power points, if they’re into that.

27. Shared E-Readers

For an employee perk that shares even more knowledge, supply your office with a set of Kindles or Fire readers.  The more you enrich yourself, the more riches you have to share with your co-workers.  Even if those riches resemble Young Adult angst.

28. Experience Tickets

If it’s more of an active workplace, take everyone instead to an experience, like the recent Happy Place or Candytopia in LA.  Jump in giant ball pits, get lost in halls of mirrors, and naturally – get your picture taken every step of the way.  After all, it’s the office that Instagrams together that stays together.

29. Office Book Club

And where else would you (responsibly) share your Young Adult angst?

30. Mentorship Program

Another way to do exactly that is running an office mentorship program, pairing employees up with each other to pass on what their best skills and talents.  Whether it directly pertains to daily office life, or encompasses an outside skill set altogether, two heads are always better than one.

31. Group Art

Whether it’s outside the office, or in the middle of the lobby, bringing a team together from different departments is a whole lot easier when the focus is on creating art.  Be it painting, sculpting, or even just basic scrapbooking, group art projects don’t just bring coworkers together, they bring the best out of them.  Especially when alcohol’s involved.

32. Wardrobe Allowance

Self-expression you wear tends to be even more popular than the type you put on your desk.  Like way more popular.  For the office with a dress code, however casual, an allowance for wardrobe is always appreciated, helping your coworkers look their best so they can also feel their best.

33. No Dress Code

Barring a wardrobe allowance, instituting a no dress code policy’s the best kind of sartorial employee perk.  Let your guard down and let your coworkers’ freak flags fly – from cargo shorts to Dalmatian onesies.  You were warned.

34. Free Gym Membership

For a more straightforward employee perk to whole body wellness, a gym membership does a whole lot of good for the body.  It’ll keep your coworkers’ cores as fit as their minds, and probably do a lot for collective confidence too.

35. Meditation

No matter the form it takes, meditation’s become a vital component to 21st century office life, combating the daily stresses of multiple open tabs in multiple open windows on multiple screens for multiple hours of the day.  It’s a shot in the arm for morale and mental health that pays for itself quickly where mindfulness goes, productivity tends to follow.  And follow so quickly it’ll feel more like it’s happening all at once.  Enlightenment messes with time that way.

36. Flexible Hours

While we’re on the subject of flexibility, flexible hours tend to solve a lot of problems in a big office, letting employees with different jobs do them in the slice of time that makes the most sense to them.  And the best part is, it’s impossible to be late.

37. Extra Time Off for the

Creative execution is key for all marketers to reach consumers

It’s the first quarter. You’ve hopefully had some time away from your desk for the holidays and are getting back to the grind. There’s no better time than now to start considering and exploring new marketing ideas and strategies. We’re firm believers in seriously cool ways to reach consumers through non-traditional marketing known as experiential marketing. We also believe that marketing is changing. Scratch that—marketing HAS changed. The principles remain the same: segment your market, identify your target, tailor a product, determine the price, distribute, and promote However, the dynamics have been evolving with technology, and it’s time to take the Apple approach and “Think different”.

The audiences you once reached through methods such as a 30 second commercial spot have already set their DVR to pre-record the Kardashians and fast-forward right through it. Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify and iHeartRadio phone apps are rapidly replacing radio during drive time in the car. YouTube overall reaches more 18-34 year-olds than any cable network in the US with more than half of those views coming from mobile devices*. E-commerce is outpacing the in-store experience and to the demise of brick and mortar stores, consumers can get just about anything delivered to their doorstep…within an hour. Props to Amazon!

How can you take what you have to offer to the next level and engage with your target market in a way they prefer to be spoken and marketed to?

It comes down to finding your niche and focusing on it, creatively. PIADA did this successfully by putting their brand in motion—literally by engaging consumers where they played in real life. Check out how PIADA Italian Street Food capitalized on creativity through its on-brand experiential marketing campaign developed and executed by Event Marketing Strategies.

Business Development Referral Strategies

Referral Strategies

A key to having a robust referral strategy is to make sure that your current clients are aware that you actually want referrals. Referrals from happy customers are one of best ways that B2B companies generate new business. OK, this isn’t a huge surprise. However, what is surprising how few companies have a dedicated strategy for fostering these valuable personal hand-offs.

4 Obvious, Yet Wonderful Benefits Of A Referral

A referral is a white-hot lead. If we assume that your happy customers are savvy enough to recommend you to the right potential customer then you are well on your way to establishing a valuable conversation and a new business win.

The closing ratio of referrals is higher (it has been reported that the closing-ratio of a referral is 6 times greater than an unqualified lead.)

For the obvious reason that a referred prospect is generally a very motivated buyer, the referral-generated sales cycle can be as much as 75% shorter.

A referral strategy is cost-effective and will reduce your sales expenditures – free is good. Free is a great place to start.

6 Effective ‘Active’ Referral Strategies

I’ve generated referrals from existing clients and customers using the following set of strategies. Given the fact that you are talking to happy customers or friends, these strategies will be a very efficient use of your “sales” effort.

  1. Start with an objective. Know what increase in referrals you are targeting and what type of clients you want. Unqualified referrals are not a good thing.
  2. Determine which of your clients or friends, these could be people you talk with or people you stay in touch with on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are contacts that might know the people or businesses on your prospect list. Do the research to help your clients help you.
  3. Go ahead… ask for referrals. Some referrals come because your client or buddy is specifically asked if they know of a good company in a your business category. Some come because your customers love you so much they actively ‘sell’ you. Some need to be stimulated to think about how to help you. It’s OK to ask. It is also wise to let them know what type of referral you are looking for. Take away as much guess work as you can. Make it easy for them to refer you. But, do not overdo it. Clearly, you do not what your clients to feel burdened.
  4. However, before you ask, make sure that your current clients are motivated to refer your service or products. I’ve written about how to determine which of your clients might be referral magnets. Check out: Is Your Agency Loved?
  5. You might need a bit of time to massage your clients through the delivery of unexpected services ahead of directly asking for their help. As they say, give and ye shall receive.
  6. A big must. If you get a referral, make sure that you keep the referrer informed about your conversations and any progress. Don’t forget to say thank you. If you actually win new business, you might want to consider sending a gift as follow-up.
