International B2B Markets and E-commerce

4.5 International B2B Markets and E-commerce

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the reasons why firms in the same industries are often located in the same geographic areas.
  2. Explain the effect e-commerce is having on the firms, the companies they do business with, where they are located, and the prices they charge.
  3. Outline the different types of e-commerce sites and what each type of site is used for.

International B2B Markets

Another characteristic of B2B markets that you may or may not have noticed or thought about is that firms in the same industry tend to cluster in the same geographic areas. In the United States, many banks and financial companies are located on or near Wall Street in New York City. Many film and television companies operate out of Hollywood. Is it just by chance that this has occurred? No.

The clustering occurs because the resources these firms need—both human and natural—are located in some areas and not others. For example, the Gulf of Mexico is rich with oil deposits. As a result, many oil companies and facilities are located along or near the Gulf in cities such as Houston. Likewise, many high-tech companies are located in Silicon Valley (California). One reason is that nearby Stanford University is one of the top computer-science schools in the country and the firms want to hire graduates from the school.

Figure 4.8

A Bollywood movie poster

Bollywood, which refers to the film industry in India, has become one of the largest film centers in the world. It’s growing faster than Hollywood and is beginning to rival its size.

But that’s not the only reason businesses in the same industry cluster together. Another reason is the sellers want to be close to their buyers. Bentonville, Arkansas, the world headquarters of Walmart, used to be a sleepy little rural town. As Walmart grew, so have the number of companies moving into the area to do business with Walmart. In the last twenty years, the size of the town has nearly tripled.

Why do companies want to be near their buyers? Let’s go back to our date analogy. Suppose you hit it off with the person you’re interested in and you become “an item.” You probably wouldn’t want to be half the world away from the person for a long period of time because you would miss the person and because you wouldn’t want a rival moving in on your turf! The same is true for sellers. Buyers also want to be close to their suppliers because it can help them get inventory more quickly. Dell’s suppliers are located right next to the company’s assembly plants. And, as you have learned, some companies actually locate their personnel on their customers’ sites.

B2B E-Commerce

Not all B2B buyers and sellers are cozying up to one another location-wise today, though: e-commerce, or commerce conducted electronically, such as over the Internet, has made locating near buyers less important. Consider the Hubert Company, a Cincinnati-based firm that sells supplies to the food industry. “Just ten years ago the Internet didn’t exist for the Hubert Company, and today almost 30 percent of our business comes through the Internet as an ordering mechanism,” says Bart Kohler, president of the company1. However, the Hubert Company can no longer protect the market in and around Cincinnati just because it’s headquartered there. “Whereas in the past, I was somewhat insulated to just people in my area, now there really are no geographic boundaries anymore, and anyone can compete with me anywhere,” Kohler explains. The advantage is that whereas the United States is a mature market in which growth is limited, other countries, like Brazil, India, and China, are growing like crazy and represent huge e-commerce opportunities for the Hubert Company, he says.

Figure 4.9

Hubert Company website screen shot

The Hubert Company sells to companies all over the globe, including the U.S. government. Notice the GSA link in the upper right-hand corner of its Web page.

B2B e-commerce was actually a little slower to take hold than B2C e-commerce, though. Initially, the Web sites of many B2B firms were static. There was no interactivity. “We put our first Web site up in 1998, and it really didn’t do anything,” Kohler explains. “All it did was it had the picture of the company. I think it had a picture of me holding a catalog with a toll-free number at the bottom, and said, ‘Hey, call this number and we’ll send you a catalog.’”

Things have changed. Companies have since developed sophisticated e-commerce systems that allow their customers to do many things for themselves. As a result, they have been able to cut down on the amount of customer service they need to provide. Does your business want to ship your products cheaply across the country via rail? You can sign up online for an account with a railroad like Union Pacific (UP), reserve some rail cars on UP’s site, and choose the route you want them to travel. Later, after you ship the goods, you can check your account balance on the Web site and track the rail cars online like when packages are shipped with FedEx and UPS. The office supply chain Staples has special Web sites set up for each of its business customers, which are customized with online catalogs containing the types of products they buy at the prices they seem to be willing to pay, based on their past purchases on StaplesLink.com (Turban, et. al., 2009). Today’s B2B sites are far from static.

Types of B2B Web Sites

Figure 4.10 An Example of a Sell-Side B2B Web site

An example of a sell-side B2B website

Most of the examples we’ve described so far are examples of sell-side e-commerce sites. A sell-side site is a site in which a single seller sells products to many different buyers. Figure 4.10 “An Example of a Sell-Side B2B Web site” shows the direction of the sale of goods and services sold on a sell-side site, such as the Hubert Company has.

But there are buy-side e-commerce sites as well. A buy-side site is one in which a business buys products from multiple sellers that go there to do business with the firm. Some government agencies have buy-side sites. B2B exchanges are e-commerce sites where multiple buyers and sellers go to find and do business with one another. (You can think of the exchanges as being somewhat like Craigslist but composed solely of business buyers and sellers.) Sites such as these make their money by charging buyers and sellers a fee when they conduct transactions with one another. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, B2B exchanges sprouted up on the Internet like weeds. Cyber entrepreneurs took a “build it and they will come” attitude, hoping to earn a fee off the transactions conducted on site. Many of these sites have failed, but not all of them. One of the most successful and largest exchanges is Alibaba.com, founded in 1999 as a trading platform for small and medium manufacturers to sell their wares2. ChemNet.com is a global exchange where companies go to buy and sell chemicals of all kinds. The homepage for ChemNet is shown in Figure 4.11. (Ammonium, sodium, or potassium, anyone?)

Figure 4.11

ChemNet website screen shot

Need chemicals? You can find them on the B2B exchange Web site ChemNet.

B2B auctions are Web-based auctions that occur between businesses. The auctions can be either sell side or buy side. An example of a sell-side auction is a B2B auction that occurs on eBay or a site like AssetAuctions.com where surplus industrial equipment is sold. Motorola regularly sells small quantities of products at the end of their life cycles on eBay. Motorola has found that eBay is a good way to make some money from products that businesses are reluctant to buy otherwise because they are being discontinued3. Sell-side auctions are sometimes referred to as forward auctions.

Buy-side auctions, by contrast, reverse the traditional auction formula, which is to help the seller get the highest price for the product. Instead, the buyer initiates the auction in order to find the cheapest supplier of a product. Sellers then bid against one another, offering the lowest prices they can for their products, in order to get the buyer’s business. Because the roles of the buyers and sellers are reversed in buy-side auctions, they are often referred to as reverse auctions.

Not all companies use an intermediary like eBay or AssetAuctions to conduct their auctions, though. Some companies conduct their own auctions on their Web sites so they don’t have to pay a fee to an intermediary. For example, General Motors auctions off reconditioned vehicles to auto dealers on its own Web site, http://www.gmonlineauctions.com.

Pricing in E-commerce Markets

One of the consequences of e-commerce is that B2B customers can easily shop around from the convenience of their cubicles or offices, bid on products, and read blogs about products from industry experts. That’s what buyers generally do before they get on the phone or personally meet with sellers. E-commerce has made it especially easy for buyers to compare prices. And the cheapest price often attracts the most attention.

The result is that B2B sellers (and B2C sellers) have found their ability to raise prices is limited. The problem is more acute when products are very similar to one another (commodities) and B2B auctions and exchanges are utilized. If you are a buyer of chemicals looking for a supplier on ChemNet, do you want to pay more for one brand of a chemical that has the same molecular formula as every other brand? Maybe not. However, if you believe you can get better service from one company than from another, you might pay more. “Everything has become much more of a commodity, commodity meaning that it’s basically more and more about price,” says Kohler about e-commerce competition. “So my challenge as a distributor is that I have got to constantly find new ways to try to create value for Hubert’s customers.” When he is able to find a new way to create value, the decision becomes less about price and he can compete more effectively.

To avoid e-commerce price wars, some companies refuse to sell their products directly online or put prices on them. Snapper products are an example. Go to Snapper.com, and you will find a lot of information about Snapper mowers and snowblowers online and dealers where you can buy them. But you won’t see any prices listed. Nor can you buy a product directly from the Web site.

Key Takeaway

Firms in the same industry tend to cluster in the same geographic areas because the resources these firms need—both human and natural—are located in some areas and not others. Sellers also want to be close to their buyers. E-commerce, or commerce conducted electronically such as over the Internet, has made locating near buyers less important for business-to-business sellers and opened up opportunities for them to sell their products around the world. However, e-commerce has also led to more competition and made it difficult for sellers to raise their prices. B2B e-commerce was slower to take hold than B2C e-commerce. Companies have since developed sophisticated e-commerce systems, including sell-side and buy-side Web sites, exchanges, and B2B auctions.

Review Questions

  1. Name some other industries you’re aware of in which companies tend to cluster geographically. Why are the companies in these industries located near one another?
  2. How do B2B exchange sites differ from B2B auction sites?
  3. How can firms that sell their products on the Internet prevent their prices from being driven down by competitors?

How to Become a Successful Woman Entrepreneur

What are some of the challenges women face as small business owners?

They face all of the same challenges as men who own businesses, plus some additional ones, including challenges related to getting their businesses funded and finding mentors and role models. As a journalist on women’s entrepreneurship, I have often heard from female business owners, “I didn’t know there were women out there just like me.”

What are some myths about women business owners?

I think one of the biggest is that women aren’t interested in growing their businesses. That is definitely not what I’ve found in my conversations with women business owners across industries. They are very interested in building businesses that have an impact on the world, and to do that they know they need to grow. And the belief that women don’t have the educational and professional backgrounds to found and run tech companies, which may have been true back in the 70s, but isn’t the case now in 2010. I think it’s a major myth that women don’t help each other in business.

What are some of the ways women sabotage themselves as business owners?

Not sure how to answer this since I don’t know that there are gender-specific ways that women (or men) sabotage themselves. I do know that many entrepreneurs (male and female) have to struggle to overcome the urge to do everything themselves.

Why are Venture Capitalists (VCs) less likely to fund women?

I agree with something said by one of my interview subjects, Cindy Padnos of Illuminate Ventures. She said, “It’s not about a bunch of evil-minded men.” Rather, a lot of it has to do the tendency of people who are similar — whether it’s in terms of race, sex, schools attended, etc. — to feel more comfortable with others like them. It also has to do with “pattern recognition,” which essentially relates to the mental shortcuts investors take to determine whether a venture will succeed. If the last 10 successful companies were founded by nerdy white guys who went to Stanford, that’s what investors will be looking for when assessing a company’s chances of success.

What challenges face women venture capitals who would like to fund women?

Until women reach critical mass in Venture Capital firms, they are going to be understandably reluctant go out on a limb to continually recommend that their firms fund women. They may (justifiably) fear appearing biased if they do so, which says a lot about what we consider “normal.” After all, no one would ever say, “We can’t fund this guy because we just funded 3 white guys just like him.” And yet, you can envision people protesting that they had just funded a woman, and had therefore somehow met their “quota.”

Many women do not support other women in business, what are the ways this can be combated?

This is something you often hear, but I’ve never seen real evidence of it, either in my life or in the lives of the women I write about. I think this is the kind of thinking some people in the media like to promote, which is what prompted me to write my She Owns It post, “Women Don’t Help Each Other?” [http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/11/women-dont-help-each-other/] [short link: http://nyti.ms/cBv3Wv] In my blog, I have covered woman after woman who has made it a priority to help other women.

Is it a good idea to niche a business targeting women customers?

The answer depends on the business. The most crucial thing is to know your customers VERY well. If they’re women, by all means target them.

So many women juggle kids, hubby and their business, do you have some tips on doing this well?

I think it’s about doing work you absolutely love. When you love your work, you find time for it no matter what. You don’t typically hear people who are passionate about their work complaining that they have no time. I recommend the book 168 Hours: You have more time than you think (http://www.my168hours.com/blog/). Among the people the author writes about is Teresa Daytner, a mother of six who founded and runs a $3.5 million construction company. She knows what’s important and doesn’t waste time on what isn’t. I also think that women who find themselves bearing a disproportionate share of childcare and household duties need to ask themselves why they continue to do that, and why they don’t expect more of their partner (if they have one).

Often women are accused of making emotional decisions and not business decisions? What are your thoughts?

Well, that kind of general accusation seems pretty silly. I guess one’s response would have to depend on who’s making the accusation and what you want or need from them as a business owner. On a related subject, I think that women are increasingly being recognized for their leadership skills. I read a recent study on the qualities of women as leaders. The study found: women leaders are more persuasive than their male counterparts; When feeling the sting of rejection, women leaders learn from adversity and carry on with an “I’ll show you” attitude; women leaders demonstrate an inclusive, team-building leadership style of problem solving and decision making, and women leaders are more likely to ignore rules and take risks. Link: http://bit.ly/a9NfiV.

Can you give any advice for women working with their spouses in business?

Adriana Gardella: That’s a tough one–and also a subject I plan to cover in an upcoming post! So, I’d love to get back to you on this one. I think as with any business partner, having a clear division of labor is important, and a crystal clear agreement as to what happens to the business if you wind up being one of the many couples to divorce. As I start to research this topic, I am learning that VCs don’t like to fund couples partly because of that risk. In fact, they even prefer to fund women!

What kinds of things should women business owners be reading to stay sharp in business?

That answer will be industry-specific. I don’t think there’s anything unique to women that they should read. The important thing is to be up on all trends and developments in your field, subscribing to relevant industry/trade publications online and off to keep current

12 Different WaysAdvertise Small Business Online

12 Different WaysAdvertise Small Business Online- We live in exciting times, at least as it relates to online advertising. Just a few years ago, the bulk of online advertising options consisted of either pay-per-click or display ads, we now have more ways than ever to connect with customers online. And with ever-evolving technology, our ads are becoming more customizable and trackable, providing even more value to business owners, especially for mobile devices. Let’s look at some of the most innovative online advertising options available to you today to market your small business.

  1. SMS and MMS Mobile Ads

Sending your customers special offers via text messaging is great way to advertise your brand, since average user looks at their smartphones 150 times a day. SMS refers to text messages, while MMS can include video or photos. Both provide a great way to get people to click to your website or come into your store to redeem an offer.

  1. Social Media Ads

If you’ve ever paid attention to the right-hand side of your Facebook page, you’ve likely seen Facebook Ads. Facebook supports multiple advertising types including, Instagram, Audience Network and Messenger. There are others social media site who are happy to sell you ads too: Twitter, and LinkedIn offer you the opportunity to target the audience who sees your ad, as well as set your own budget. Social media ads are a great option for small budgets, because you can spend as little as $5 to test them out. If they net results, you can increase your spend.

  1. Google Ads

Google AdWords Express is now Google’s answer to Facebook Ads. The lower cost version of Google AdWords allows small businesses to launch campaign for a modest budget. Now for “dirty jobs” businesses, Google has launched Local Services by Google, which is mobile advertising for local service providers like plumbers, electricians, carpet cleaners etc. who book jobs by appointment. You can launch campaign for as little as $5 dollars per lead. You must become pre-certified by Google to buy this service.

  1. Display Advertising

This type of ad is probably the one you’re most familiar with. Display ads are those banners and sidebar ads on your favorite news site. While they’re more dynamic and engaging than they were in the past, they’re not always the best way to reach an audience. In fact, 200 million internet users have installed ad blocking software so they don’t have to see those ads.

  1. Native Advertising

One ad option that is seeing some success right now is the native ad. This type of advertising is usually placed within your social media stream, looks and feels like a blog post or article, but it’s actually a paid ad. There might be an article sponsored by an airline in your feed that provides 10 tips for holiday travel. It’s useful in that it’s an article, but it’s clear that the airline published it, and that they’d like you to visit their website.

  1. Geo-Targeted Advertising

When you incorporate where a lead is into your advertising strategy — particularly if you own a local business and want to attract foot traffic — you have significant opportunity to convert. Both online ads and mobile ads can be geo-targeted, meaning you can ensure that your ad only shows up to people who are within a certain number of miles from your business. If, for example, a shopper is a few blocks from your store and gets your mobile push notification telling her that you’re offering 30% off all products for the next few hours, she’s likely to redeem that offer.

  1. Video Advertising

Video, too, is a great advertising channel. There are three types video ads that YouTube offers TrueView in-stream ads, which show up across the bottom of the video, Bumper ads, which are perfect for mobile ads and TrueView discovery ads, which show up in search results, Let’s say you sell makeup. You could target your ad to appear on videos of makeup application tutorials, since your audience would be most likely to watch those types of videos.

  1. Retargeted Ads

Have you ever looked at, for example, a purse on a website, then noted that it “followed you around” the internet, appearing in ads on various websites? This is retargeting. The hope is that if you keep seeing that purse, you will eventually decide to buy it. Retargeting is great for ecommerce business owners who want to drive sales.

  1. Geo-Fencing Ads

Here’s another interesting mobile ad option: while geo-targeted ads may blanket a several-mile radius around your store, geo-fencing can pinpoint a customer who is in or very near your store. You could even target customers on a particular aisle of your store to direct them to a nearby promotion with a pop-up coupon or offer.

  1. Chatbot Advertising

Chatbots — may be the next biggest thing in advertising. Using messaging apps like Facebook Messaging or WhatsApp, brands use artificial intelligence to anticipate what a shopper might want. Let’s say a shopper looks at a pair of boots on a website. The chatbot could pop up in a small window on the screen and recommend a pair of socks to go with the boots…at a 10% discount.

  1. Branded Applications

Having your own mobile app can drive brand loyalty and repeat business. You could have a mobile wallet that allows loyalty card members to ditch their plastic loyalty card and use their phone to redeem special offers. You could also use your app to send push notifications to mobile shoppers to keep them engaged and buying from you.

  1. QR Codes

If you’re looking for a way to bridge the gap between your customers’ offline and online behavior, QR codes fit the bill. In your store, you can have a QR code for shoppers to scan to get more information about a product, see your menu or be added to your email or text offer list, to enter a contest.

5 tips for hiring the best brand ambassadors

1. Those who fit your target demographic

Ensuring your target demographic is mirrored in your BAs is essential. The consumer will feel comfortable to speak with the BA right away, and will be more likely to take the time to consider what they have to say because people connect with similar people.

2. The social butterflies

People connect with people, especially when they are authentic, genuine, and relatable. Find BAs that spark conversation with ease and can charm just about anyone. Friendly, kind, and charismatic are qualities that are mandatory to have when it comes to representation. People trust recommendations and opinions of people that they connect with.

3. People with reach and resonance

People with a natural ability to influence their peers are the kind of people you’ll want to hire. Social media influencers are often good options to reach out to if you desire more digital traffic. Otherwise, people that have held leadership positions elsewhere, had marketing or advertising related work, or simply persuasive personalities are traits that are important to look for in a potential BA.

4. Quick learners with deep understanding

Your BAs need to know the product or service like the back of their hand. BAs are providing potential customers a valuable experience by allowing them to connect with someone that can answer all questions that may arise, thus creating a greater chance to turn a potential customer into a lifelong customer. Make sure your BAs are armed with as much information as possible, then some, so they are ready to educate your new customers.

5. People with a passion for your brand

The best brand ambassador you can have is someone that already has a passion for your brand. It’s hard to fake excitement, so having someone with true and genuine passion for your product will only benefit your company’s sales. Plus, the brand ambassador will be more likely to talk up your products because of their excitement about being a part of your team.

Our Senior Vice President, Drew McCartt says “Brand ambassadors are imperative to bringing a brand to life and creating a dialogue in a way no other type of marketing can achieve in an honest and authentic way. Nothing compares to one-on-one, face-to-face engagement to drive results.” For more information about how to create a dialogue about your company using brand ambassadors, check out Drew’s interview with Smart Business.

Name Advertising Agency

The Naming Process

Yes, there is a process to naming. I believe that selecting a name should be one of the most important elements of your new advertising agency’s marketing plan (a new name also works for agency’s that need a facelift and repositioning.) And, importantly, this process deserves your team’s best thinking and the time to ensure that you have selected the most powerful name possible. Most of us thought hard about what name to give our kids or the letters on our vanity license plates. Your company deserves this as well.

Objectives & Positioning.

You cannot begin to name your brand without establishing a clear brand positioning and business objectives which in the case of ad agencies sometimes just means sounding cool. In San Francisco alone, agency names span Muh-Tay-Zik Hof-fer’s self-love (OK, maybe its just name-play) to Argonaut’s promise of brand voyage (I assume) to Engine Company 1 (yes, you guessed it) to Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners and Goodby Silverstein & Partners’ authenticity (for old times sake) to BarrettSF and its hope for BarrettNY — I suspect.

I don’t have a favorite agency name. But, thinking strategically, 72andSunny comes close to a home run with its evocation of warmth, smiles and a really nice terrace. In this case, 72andSunny nails one of the most important attributes that clients look for in a new relationship — chemistry. I’ll have a chilled Rose with that Cleo, please.

Personality.

What is your advertising agency’s personally? Are your smart, friendly, quirky, sincere, a quant jock, strategic or give good lunch? Maybe you are about where you live like London Advertising and its delivery of “London creative excellence” to any client anywhere in the world. Smart positioning and smart name. yes, own the whole city, why not.

Competitive Review.

OK, this is a duh. A competitive review should examine your competitor’s brand positionings and their brand names. Depending who you talk to there are like 4,000 agencies in the USA. Sounding like the competition won’t help you stand out.

Two agencies in town named Bread and Butter won’t work. Hmmm, Saatchi & Saatchi and M&C Saatchi might not work that well either. But then, M&C wanted to piss off Saatchi and they delivered on their objective.

For help in finding existing agency names, take a look at my global Pinterest Agency Directory and at Agency Compile’s list.

Brand Name Development.

Once you have your positioning and a deep understanding of your competition its time to review the type of names that will work hard for you. Are these neologisms, current usage words, hybrids, acronyms or founder names?

Trademark Review.

Performing a trademark review should be conducted early rather than later. Don’t fall in love with an agency name you can’t own (unless you have Apple-sized cojones.) There are three steps to reviewing trademarks. For initial review, I Google and Bing it, then its on to the United States Patent and Trademark Office trademark database. Use of this database is a good start but should not be considered conclusive.I also use the services of a trademark attorney. The final step is to trademark your new brand name. Believe me, get your trademark right because if you don’t it will eventually bite you hard.

Research.

Once I determine a set of potential brand names I pair these with the brand positioning and often a brand platform for each name to help evaluate the creative rationale and relative value of each name.

The names can be tested via qualitative (one-on-one or focus group methodology) or quantitative techniques including online surveys. Research? really? It sounds a bit pedantic right? It didn’t to Paul Malmstrom of Mother.

“The name ‘Mother’ basically came out of a focus group in the general public,” co-founder Paul Malmstrom told AdFreak. “Sixteen different tests were done around a randomly generated set of words, and all groups (except one) settled for ‘Mother’ as a top contender. The tests showed ‘Mother’ had pretty positive associations, ranging from ‘Nurturing,’ ‘Familiar’ to ‘Don’t eat with your mouth open.’ To the founders this seemed to be great values to base the agency on. Words not rated as high were, for example, ‘Wallet,’ ‘Meager’ and ‘Clogs,’ but a close runner-up was (inexplicably) the word ‘Wienerschnitzel.’ “

A Final Thought

Brand names do not work in an isolated environment. A brilliant brand name will not overcome the downside of a poor product or service; it will not be enough to surmount an ineffective marketing plan or inadequate budget. The powerful brand name must work in a holistic marketing environment to reach its potential.

That said, the powerful brand name will, without question, add energy to your marketing program, will make you stand out from the crowd, will make you memorable (very important in a world where word-of-mouth marketing is a key agency objective) and the right name could add real value to your company’s net worth.

“A” Is A Good Place To Start.

OK. One more final thought. A few years ago, I founded a company named ActiveBuddy – here is our start-up launch video. The name came from our entry into the Instant Messaging category with a service that let people use natural language to talk to computers using IM.  The name made sense – remember how active your buddy list was? That said, I witnessed a great extra benefit of ActiveBuddy when I attended Internet trade shows and realized that we were always at the top of the attendee, exhibitor or speaker list. Our name started with an “A”. While this realization was a “duh” moment, it made me fully understand the Power of the name AAA Plumbing within the context of directories and how important it is is to pay attention to every objective. Remember, gyro won’t go down easy in Athens.
