Selling the Magic

Selling the Magic

I don’t usually dwell on the past, or entertain regret. But who doesn’t occasionally wonder, what if I could do things over again? What would I do differently?

The creative aspect of inventing is magical. Magical in its surreal quality, its sudden burst forth, and the endless possibility it offers. Every inventor and creator thrives on and loves that moment. It’s hands down, the very best. But unfortunately, that magical moment is also very, very brief. And after its over, our work begins.

Our job must inherently be to sell that magic – sell our own magic. This is the part of inventing I originally struggled with and failed at. It’s hard to sell something you’ve created! It sounds fake, phony. Forced. It’s uncomfortable.

But the bottom line is this. If you can’t do it, you need to find someone who can.

In order to succeed in bringing their products to market, inventors must wear many hats. It’s unfair and unrealistic to assume that you can wear them all well. Teaming up or getting help isn’t a sign of weakness or ineptitude. Rather, it demonstrates how well you know yourself and your strengths.

So, if I could go back? I’d create my own holy trinity: a salesman, an expert in finance, and the creator, myself. This is obviously fantasy – few inventors have the resources to create a superhero team, at least initially. But what I do know is that I’ve learned to rely on other people, and to also try my hardest to make myself the complete package. But how much easier it would have been…

There isn’t much more I can do to highlight how necessary the ability to sell your product, your benefits is, other than to capitalize the word and type it over and over again throughout the remainder of this page. I’ll spare you. But do me, and yourself a favor. Learn from my “what if”, and don’t make it yours.

Walk, Run or Just Sit Tight

Walk, Run or Just Sit Tight

If you’ve landed a new job lately (or it just feels that way) you may feel somewhat lost, a little befuddled, not quite sure how to proceed. One of best solutions to this conundrum is to just sit tight. Watching and observing don’t feel like much, but the value of just taking it all in, even if you’ve been there a while (though it those circumstances you might want to be a little less obvious), is tremendous.
The problem with hitting the ground running is that you don’t always see the stuff that could make you stumble or, worse, tip you over as if you never saw it coming, whatever “it” was. Sometimes it’s overstepping your boundaries. In some cases, it’s not understanding a company’s culture or, worse, not even caring about the culture at all.
In The Truth About managing Your Career, author Karen Otazo quips that the “main problem with hitting the ground running is that you don’t know what you’re running into?” Most people who take off without checking out their surroundings risk running into things, sometimes head-on, other times with more subtle and indirect consequences. Nevertheless, it’s best to assess your surroundings before making any brash moves. But the way one person assesses her surroundings is bound to be different than a colleague’s ideas about the same thing.
Certainly, investing in some due diligence of your own is called for and part of that process should include asking questions of the right people. Of course if you ask too many questions, you might become known as a pest, so you’ve got to space this out. Another due diligence strategy would be to read everything you can get your hands on. Reading over old files is generally no one’s idea of a great time, but a little nugget of information could offer a year’s worth of perspective. Don’t be surprised, though, if the reading and reviewing feels like you’re slowing yourself down. I think that’s normal. I feel that way a lot when I need to ramp up quickly on a topic or a company or whatever, but I try to remind myself that sitting still, staying off the phone for a bit and keeping myself off the computer isn’t always a bad thing.
In addition to getting up to speed by researching and listening to what people say (and aren’t saying)  you’ll want to find out how you’re doing even in those early months. Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. People might be surprised, because it could be that you’re the first in a long time to do such a thing. It’s amazing, though, how receptive people are when others ask for their opinions. I think it’s probably due to the fact that it simply doesn’t happen very often.  And don’t underestimate the amount of data you might glean from a spontaneous encounter with a new colleague. Sure, you may surprise him with your curiosity, but in the long- and short-term you could be solidifying your position not just as a valuable member of a team but as someone other people like to be around.

Livescribe, along with Vision Objects, has recently released a new Mac-friendly handwriting recognition device called the Pulse Smartpen, which is capable of picking up handwriting movements of users and converts it to digital images with pinpoint accuracy. The device, according to the company, will serve as an alternative for people who want the traditional feel of writing down notes but with the modern technology as its base.

The new Smartpen was released earlier this year for Mac users. The pen, much like any ordinary pen, has a ballpoint connected to a built-in flash card that recognizes what you are writing or drawing.

When used in a Livescribe special paper, the Pulse Smartpen can also record the sound of the scratch caused by the pen as you jot things down.

The company said that the new Smartpen is ideal for people who rely heavily on writing such as journalists, secretaries, businessmen, and even students.

Also, the company on Monday has released the newest addition to its jotting device called MyScript. The new program automatically creates a dictionary or lists of words frequently being used by the owners. It can even recall drawings, shapes, and tables.

Users can buy the Smartpen for $150 for the 1GB model and an additional $50 for the 2GB model.

Do you have sufficient knowledge when it comes to computers? Then why don’t you turn that knowledge into money by venturing into the PC business?

This is the ultimate business which can provide you more money. One of the best forms in venturing into the PC business is through remote PC. In this kind of business, clients will be provided a specialized PC repair instead of an internet chat with a PC technician. Usually, the PC technician will be the one to feed certain instructions to be followed by the client. This is also considered to be a very convenient one for the client because he or she no longer needs to travel just to get his or her PC fixed.
Techniques in Starting a PC Business
Two of the things you need in this kind of business are website and telephone. For you to focus on a specific service, you need to decide on the type of PC repair service you will be offering. There are services which provide support for software while others choose to offer hardware support. The target market must also be identified. Now if you want to render service to individual end-users, you can only offer anti-virus, internet setup and support and repair installation.
In this kind of business, it is very important for you to get the trust of your client so one of the proofs of your expertise is the computer support certification. This will only show that you know how to apply your technical skills for a variety of PC support concerns.
The price structure will also be very important. In setting your fixed price for every service rendered, make sure that it would be both for the client and for yourself as well. By offering competitive prices, more people will be interested in doing business with you. In order for you to know how to price competitively, you must look at how other remote PC businesses in your area charge their clients. If you only plan to offer local services, then what you need to do is charge for only affordable rates.
Next, you have to carefully assemble the equipments together. The best key for you to operate this business without hassle is by having an internet connection that is stable. Depending on the size of your business, you also need to have sufficient computers. If you are the sole man who will operate this business, two PCs can already suffice. In order for your business to successfully cater to the needs of several clients, you also need to have software emulator and operating system.
A corporate website is also very important in order for you to gain more potential clients. This is also where the technicians and the clients will discuss their sessions for the PCs to be repaired.
Next, you can market your business by using the best marketing strategies.

How to Start a 99 Cent Store

If you have experience in retail, particularly in deep discount retailing, you could consider starting a 99 cent store.

It is like starting a regular retail store except that you have to ingeniously find a way to get merchandise from suppliers that you can sell for less than a dollar. The original 99-cent concept for a retail store was started in 1982 by Dave Gold, who was trying to speed up sales of wines. Stores that sell merchandise for not more than $1 are also called dollar stores. There are several ways to open a retail store that sell items at less than $1. You can do so by starting on your own. Alternatively, you can get a franchise, or get help from consultants.
Starting a 99 cent store is similar to starting a general retail store except that you have to be ingenious enough to be able to get quality items that can be sold for $0.99 or less. Originally, 99 cent-themed stores carried only one price for all the merchandise in the store. But for ease of pricing in response to economic factors, they restructured pricing systems such that some items are sold at other prices that are below 99 cents.
99 cent stores, dollar stores and discount stores are able to cut down prices by carrying overrun goods and merchandise sold from closeouts. They also form relationships with popular distributors in order to buy items in bulk at deeply discounted prices. If you intend to start your store on your own, it would be reasonable to do so only if you have experience in such transactions, perhaps by virtue of working as a buyer in 99 cent stores, dollar stores or discount stores. Aside from this experience, you also need to be knowledgeable in running a retail business. You’d need this to successfully maneuver the business against the wave of economic forces that normally affect a retail business, and against competition with larger retailers. A modified way to owning a retail store is to purchase an existing one. For more information about such opportunities, you can look at USABizmart.
An easier, though more costly way is to franchise a 99 cent store. Find a 99 cent store you would like to franchise and send an application. You would have to pass certain requirements to be able to franchise a store concept. If you meet the qualifications and are able to enter into a contract with a franchisee, you’ll benefit from the franchisee’s training and support in starting out as well as in actually running the business.
Yet, there is still a third way. You can hire a consultant that will help you put up the business. The advantage of hiring a consultant is you get expert help in going through the process of starting up, but you retain full control in running the business. You get trainings, assistance and support the same way you will if you get a franchise. But the consultants are hands off afterwards in the operation of the store. One company that offers this kind of service is Liberty Dollar Store. One of its selling point is it can give clients the opportunity to get merchandise at prices only offered to big chains and wholesale outlets.

This article that focuses on how to make money with photography will supply you with useful information. If you want to earn more out of your crafts and talents, you may consider photography as a means. Since most of the people are really hooked up to photos, this signifies that income will be generated out of it.
Best Ways to Make Money with Photography
The initial step in this is to gather all your masterpiece photos and make your own portfolio. You may do both online as well as hardcopy of these photo albums. Both must be presented in a very captivating manner in order to have many customers as possible. Your online portfolio may be published through online social networks such as Twitter, MySpace of Facebook. In terms of the marketing strategies that you may use, you can make cards. This is one of the best ways that you can use in order to spread the nature of your business. In these business cards, you must include all the needed information. This includes all your contact information such as email and phone and fax number. Specialties in photoshoot may also be added. Make this as appealing as your photos. The tendency is that appealing cards are catchy than those that are presented in a very plain manner.
Widen your networking connections by connecting to newspapers, journals and magazines that can offer you cheaper advertising fee. Online submission of photos is also effective. But this often requires guidelines and policies. Seeking for the service of an art director is also an advantage. This is because it increases the exposure of your portfolio online.
You may also go to the local fairs and art shows that cater selling of art works such as paintings, mosaics and photos. Present your products in a unique and likable manner to attract more buyers. Also, make sure that the qualities of your products are very much competent. You can also create online stores same as the set up in Cafepress.com. Most of the buyers are utilizing the net if they want to buy products. This is because online shopping is a lot convenient than the usual outdoor shopping.
Lastly, you may run ads. There are online sites that you can use as your partner in advertising your products. These sites have access to the other online markets. Since this is free, you will save more money than to look for ad agencies that are offering high fees. Pricing of the product is also important. Make sure that it is reasonably priced to make sure that it will be easily bought.
