5 Tips For Taking Your Brand to Market

Part 1 of our Brand Basics for Small Business series, we covered the crucial first steps to setting up your brand. Once you’ve taken those initial steps and got your brand off the ground, the next stage is to start marketing, in order to raise awareness of your brand, build a customer base, and drive sales for your business. To help you get started, we’ve got five important tips for taking your brand to market.

Tip 1: Get your messaging right

In business, first impressions mean a great deal – so what your initial marketing communicates about your brand will shape the (usually lasting) opinion potential customers form about your brand.

Spend time developing clear, compelling brand messaging that succinctly communicates your brand, ties in with your brand identity, and is relevant to your target audience. Bear in mind that as your brand develops and grows, you’ll need to be able to continue delivering this messaging consistently across all platforms, so getting it right in the early stages is essential.

Tip 2: Choose the right channels

Small businesses are faced with a vast array of potential marketing tactics through which to promote their brand. From digital marketing to direct mail, the key is to identify those channels that are most appropriate to your brand – and are most likely to attract the attention of potential customers. This is where thorough market research (discussed in Part 1) is vital, as you’ll need a clear understanding of your target audience and what channels have the best chance of reaching them.

Potential marketing channels include email marketing, brochures and flyers, social media, event marketing and many more. For some ideas on using a selection of these channels successfully, check out our Guide to Becoming Marketing Active.

Tip 3: Provide clear calls to action – and incentives for following them

Whether your call to action is driving traffic to your website, encouraging email newsletter opt-ins, or increasing your social media following, you need to make this call to action as clear and straightforward as possible. Confusion or ambiguity is an immediate turn-off, so make sure you spell out exactly what people need to do and how to do it.

Behind every call to action, you need to answer the question that is inevitably on the minds of your audience: “what’s in it for me?”. By providing compelling incentives for performing the desired action, your audience is much more likely to follow your lead.

Tip 4: Go for the highest quality you can afford

While budget will always play an important role in small business marketing considerations, opting for cheap-looking, inferior quality marketing materials can do considerable damage to your brand in both the short-term and the long-term. At this early stage it’s important to remember that, as mentioned above, first impressions are critical.

Quality doesn’t just extend to the physical materials on which your marketing is delivered. Skimping on components like copywriting or design can be just as off-putting as cheap paper, so avoid cutting costs by doing it yourself. If price is an issue, consider taking a ‘less is more’ approach and focusing on doing a few key tactics well.

Tip 5: Know your goals from the outset

Before you commence any type of marketing, you need to know what you want to achieve from this activity. Once you’ve established a set of clearly defined goals, you will be able to identify the steps you need to take to achieve these targets.

When setting marketing goals, it’s important to choose targets that are achievable, as well as ensuring you are as clear as possible about your goals. Be specific about what each goal involves and outline timeframes for achievement to work towards. In addition, it’s vital to make sure your marketing goals are easy to track and measure.

While there are many other areas you’ll need to consider before embarking on a marketing strategy, taking time to focus on these five areas will provide you with a strong starting point on which to build.

Stay tuned for the final part of our Brand Basics series, in which we’ll be looking at how to maintain your brand in the long term.

We’d love to hear your experiences of taking a brand to market – if you’ve got your own tips, why not share them with the MIH community? Get in touch by leaving your comments below…

The Importance of Price to Marketers

The Importance of Price to Marketers

Since pricing has a direct impact on a company’s revenue, and thus profit, setting the right price is essential to a company’s success.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Discuss how pricing impacts marketing and business strategy

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Key Points

  • Price is important to marketers because it represents marketers’ assessment of the value customers see in the product or service and are willing to pay for a product or service.
  • Adjusting the price has a profound impact on the marketing strategy, and depending on the price elasticity of the product, it will often affect the demand and sales as well.
  • Pricing contributes to how customers perceive a product or a service.

Key Terms

  • value: a customer’s perception of relative price (the cost to own and use) and performance (quality)
  • marketing mix: A business tool used in marketing products; often crucial when determining a product or brand’s unique selling point. Often synonymous with the four Ps: price, product, promotion, and place.
image

Pricing and the Marketing Mix: Pricing might not be as glamorous as promotion, but it is the most important decision a marketer can make.

Price is important to marketers because it represents marketers’ assessment of the value customers see in the product or service and are willing to pay for a product or service. The other elements of the marketing mix (product, place and promotion ) may seem to be more glamorous than price, and thus get more attention, but determining the price of a product or service is actually one of the most important management decisions. Here’s why.

  • While product, place and promotion affect costs, price is the only element that affects revenues, and thus, a business’s profits. Price can lead to a firm’s survival or demise.
  • Adjusting the price has a profound impact on the marketing strategy, and depending on the price elasticity of the product, it will often affect the demand and sales as well. Both a price that is too high and one that is too low can limit growth. The wrong price can also negatively influence sales and cash flow.
  • Problems occur if the marketer fails to set a price that complements the other elements of the marketing mix and the business objectives, as pricing contributes to how customers perceive a product or a service. A high price indicates high quality. The term luxury comes to mind. If, however, a firm wants to position itself as a low-cost provider, it will charge low prices. Just as they do with high-end providers, consumers know what to expect when they see low prices.

So, as you can see, it is important that a company sets the right price. A company’s success can depend on it. However, with so many factors to consider along with the lack of a crystal ball that will show the effect of a price change, It isn’t so easy to do.

Captivate Your Audience

There couldn’t be a better time than the start of fall, alternatively known in the business as the beginning of trade show season, to reflect and prepare. Year after year, regardless of hot trends, our ultimate goal remains to improve the connectivity between our clients and their customers.

With this key objective in mind there are several critical timeframes for winning the audience’s’ attention, our aim is to optimize on those critical times and create messages that resonate and leave impressions on key audience members.

The most critical timeframes surrounding an event or experience are

1.) The Pre-trade show/ event- a time when event info and tips are highly sought after.

2.) During the trade show/ event- capturing attendee and qualified lead information during the experience, and most importantly creating a memorable time for each attendee.

3.) Post trade show/event- providing engagement after the event to build out the overall impression of the experience.

To get the most bang for your buck and really drive home a compelling story to your guest we suggest the following:

Use media in unique ways. Think simple but impactful. Are there members on your team with skills or interests in video production? Perhaps there’s someone in your office who has a knack for creating GIFs, or maybe you are the one who would like to learn. The most impactful elements are straightforward and simple. On any budget, innovative messages can be created and the results of your company’s messages can be tracked and their efficiency analyzed.

Before the event make sure you have a good idea of who is in your audience. What social media channels do they favor? If you have the ability to communicate with them do it! That doesn’t mean you have to have all of their emails, in fact, think outside of the email inbox. Perhaps the event you’re planning for has an online presence, make sure to get connected on all available social media channels and look for opportunities to broadcast. Several weeks before the show social media teams often run contests to drive engagement, think about how your team can drive interest and engagement in the weeks leading up to your event and engage with event contests. Also think about creative social media channels, a good starting point is location- network with the social media where the tradeshow will be held. Piggyback off of relevant events and tourism information to get your information out there. Let people know you’re going to be in town and where to find you.

Direct messaging campaign- Similar to email, Twitter also has a comprehensive direct messaging component. Select key users either in your own followership or across all of Twitter and send them a direct message. Keep the messages fresh and include a call to action like visiting you at the booth (include the number) or responding for VIP after party access. Additionally other platforms such as Snapchat offer unique features such as geo-filters which can be setup to include brand information or provide other creative branding opportunities.

Broadcast your message- Finding channels to broadcast across is key to getting your company’s message to a broader audience. Think about the type of event you’re holding or attending choose six to ten keywords to summarize it.

(example: Automotive Aftermarket Parts Expo (AAPEX)- keywords: Engines, cars, automobiles, aftermarket, mechanic, parts)

Once you have settled on some keywords, search for them in a popular search engine. Also search for them on your favorite social media sites. Look for potential platforms to broadcast across, as well as individuals to partner with.

Finding a broader readership within your target audience is a great way to gain more followers and interest in your brand.
