Brand Strategy: Build a Powerful Brand

Your B2B brand determines which signals you’re sending out to the marketplace and how you are perceived by your audience. Whether launching a new service, targeting a niche audience with specific products, or knocking the rust off a dated market position, your brand strategy is fundamental to your company’s success. That’s where we come in. Uncovering the insights that help build an effective, hard-working B2B brand position takes experience — an ability to conduct interviews that deliver more than high-level answers to boilerplate questions; curious researchers willing to explore the idiosyncrasies of your markets; creative minds that bring clarity, even when a compelling position feels obfuscated by internal biases and aggressive competitors.

Research
Interview customers and SMEs
Primary, secondary research
Messaging
Tell your story convincingly
Maintain campaign consistency
Brand Expression
Create a visual representation of your brand

We start with research — talking with your product experts and potential customers to make sure we understand the nuances of your position.

Then, we craft persuasive messages that connect with your target audience, ensuring continuity across all communications.
Finally, we create a visual identity that expresses your brand to a T.

While it’s not quite as easy as one-two-three, we’ll keep it simple, staying focused on the insights that can serve as brand building blocks and avoiding unnecessary trips down rabbit holes that won’t bring any value.

Effective marketing organisations must be driven through sound business strategy. Fulcrum produce marketing strategy that is always well embodied by your business strategy.

The best marketing strategy does not start with creative, it starts with a marketing process.

The Fulcrum Marketing Strategy Development Process is a thorough problem solving and marketing strategy development program that focusses on solving your growth challenges and maximising the return from your company’s marketing operations.

SALES METHODOLOGIES

Personal selling is a promotional method in which one party uses skills and techniques for building personal relationships with another party that results in both parties obtaining value. Personal selling occurs whenever an individual salesperson sells a product, service or solution to a client.

AIDA Method

AIDA is an acronym that stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action. This is a method that looks at the steps a client will undertake from when they first becomes aware of the product or service, to when they are making a purchase decision.

Attention – Get the other person’s interest
Interest – Spark their curiosity
Desire – Create the need
Action – Get them to commit to something

Need satisfaction

The need satisfaction technique is a question and answer technique to make the client to recognise the need for your offering. This then leads to the client agreeing that they have a need to be fulfilled, which leads to you showing them how your offer can satisfy their needs. This method is based on a win-win approach for both the sales person and the client.

Depth Theory

Depth Theory is when a creation of trust occurs between the buyer and seller. The seller uses expertise in their product, service or industry to create trust between themselves and the buyer. The client will see the salesperson as an expert in that area and will trust them to solve the issues that they have.

 Step process

The 7 step process is a plan of action that starts at the planning and preparation to make the sale and leads to after sale follow ups. The 7 steps are:
1.   Planning and preparation
2.   Introduction or opening
3.   Questioning
4.   Presentation
5.   Overcoming objections/negotiating
6.   Closing
7.   After-sales follow-up

Implementing a d2d marketing Strategy

Implementing a Marketing Strategy Execution Plan, known to Fulcrum and our clients as a “Sprint Plan” is the most effective way to prevent this highway-less journey , d2d marketing operation . A Marketing Strategy is a set of strategic goal-focused plans for a certain period of time.

d2d marketing Strategy and Planning

Implement your marketing plan

Your marketing plan must do more than just say what you want to happen. It must describe each step required to make sure that it happens.

Schedule
The plan should include a schedule of key tasks. This sets out what will be done, and by when. Refer to the schedule as often as possible to avoid losing sight of your objectives under the daily workload.
Team And Resources
It should also assess what resources you need. For example, you might need to think about what brochures you need, and whether they need to be available for distribution. You might also need to look at how much time it takes to sell to customers and whether you have enough salespeople.
Cost
The cost of everything in the plan needs to be included in a budget. If your finances are limited, your plan will need to take that into account. Don’t spread your marketing activities too thinly – it is better to concentrate your resources to make the most of your budget. You may also want to link your marketing budget to your sales forecast.
Control
As well as setting out the schedule, the plan needs to say how it will be controlled. You need an individual who takes responsibility for pushing things along. A good schedule and budget should make it easy to monitor progress. When things fall behind schedule, or costs overrun, you need to be ready to do something about it and to adapt your plan accordingly.

At the end of the process, you must own the strategy and be able work the plan yourself. You are left with a growth system which is repeatable over time to achieve consistent growth. Companies effectively implementing this program often achieve more than 25% ongoing growth per annum.

Your Challenges

Business owners, senior executives and managers are frequently facing growth related issues such as: – Turning around a declining sales trend – Identifying and entering new markets – Launching new business and product lines – Identifying emerging growth opportunities – Managing the risks of growth If you have any of the above issues, then the Fulcrum Marketing Strategy Development Process is for you.

Approach

The process considers what could be rather than only what is. Whereas, a regular marketing strategy process might simply consider what a customer tells you and respond, Fulcrum considers how a customer might react when given a slightly or radically different proposition to the one currently in the market.

Benefits

Each strategy generates actionable tasks to achieve medium and long-term revenue and growth targets. Brief but highly strategic plans are created that drill down into action items. You are then lead through specific actions to implement, or the Fulcrum team implement them for you.

Development Process

Experience the Fulcrum Marketing Strategy Development Process. It is a tailored program designed to provide companies with the highly-focussed strategy development and implementation resources necessary to address specific growth challenges and opportunities.

1. Seek and learn.

Information Gathering – The first step is to gain an understanding of the market in which you are participating; target audiences, competitor offerings, current pricing and more. Review the business realities – Gain an understanding and commitment to potential resources available to make it all happen. Review the market realities – What limitations might we be dealing with and how far can we push the market potential?

2. Set the hypothesis.

Hypothesis development – Develop the potential strategic alternatives and understand what would need to happen for them to become reality. Reality test – Review the strategies for practical application, decide which are practical now and which could be left for a future date and understand what resources are necessary to make these alternatives. Solidify strategy – Make some strategic decisions to understand which alternatives provide the growth desired, build an understanding of the risks involved, ensure all strategies can work together and consider the reality of them working within the business.

3. Set the course.

Key strategies – Articulate the strategies and provide means for measurement and communication. Plan action – Develop broad and specific actions stemming from the strategies.

4. Build a foundation.

This stage involves developing a compelling ‘marketing tool box’ that clearly defines your value to the target audience and creates appropriate messages and triggers to sale.

5. Implement and educate.

The stage after the plan development involves completing agreed actions and driving deep engagement and understanding throughout the company, whilst developing the ongoing implementation activities, including allocation of resources.

Choosing the Right Marketing Agency: Marketing Execution Vs Marketing Strategy

If you pretty much know what marketing you need to do and how it is going to be accomplished then most likely you need some type of marketing agencyto do it for you. Depending on what the activities are, you will choose a different type of agency. For example, if you are more likely to be doing TV, radio or magazine advertising you will likely need a traditional advertising agency. If it sits more in the digital realm, with a lot of Google AdWords or YouTube commercials, then a digital advertising agency is probably for you. Alternatively, you may simply need a graphic designer to bring your ideas to life.

Making Marketing Plans Happen

A marketing plan is paramount for achieving business growth. The purpose of a marketing plan is to assess the current market position of your business and develop marketing strategies and actions to undertake to meet your business objectives. Putting together a strategic plan that develops your business around your competitive advantage, and ensures that you are in a position to take advantage of your strengths, is a key to continued business prosperity. Of course, once you have the plan, making it work is the next step.

Developing an Annual Marketing Plan and Marketing Strategy

Make your business New Year resolution to start the year with an integrated marketing plan that clearly outlines your business objectives and the marketing strategies and tactics you plan to use to achieve them

An annual marketing plan helps keep businesses on track with goals and objectives for the year and ensures that marketing opportunities and budgets are maximized. Developing a marketing plan that you revisit every year is the key to success year after year.

A solid annual marketing plan should be structured with a disciplined approach to reaching your business goals and objectives, yet flexible enough to adapt to changing market conditions and business opportunities throughout the year.

Start Annual Marketing Planning by Reviewing Previous Year Marketing Performance

Before you begin the annual planning process for the coming year’s marketing efforts, you’ll want to take a close look at how you performed over the current year. Even if you did not have a structured marketing plan in place previously, you should be able to review past marketing activities and results.

Here are some questions to ask when evaluating the performance of a previous annual marketing plan or year’s activities:

  • Did you achieve desired results from your marketing efforts (such as improved brand recognition, X number of leads generated or sales/revenue figures)?
  • Which specific marketing activities were effective?
  • Which specific marketing activities were not effective?
  • Should you reallocate resources to better performing targets, markets or marketing tactics?
  • Has your target market, audience or geographic area changed over the year?
  • Were you able to stay within a marketing budget at the end of the year?
  • What areas of your marketing budget do you need to cut costs in for the coming year?
  • What areas of your marketing budget do you want to invest more in for the coming year?

The answers to questions about your previous year’s marketing plan will play a big part in building an annual marketing plan for the coming year. Each year adjustments should be made to your marketing planning efforts that incorporate learning from the past – what works or what doesn’t work.

Develop Essential Components of an Annual Marketing Plan

A marketing plan is a written document that contains a business’ marketing strategies and tactics. The first step in developing an annual marketing plan is getting organized. Make a list of all the marketing components or categories that are important for your business.

Typical components in a marketing plan include:

  • Advertising (print and/or online)
  • Branding and Graphics (promotional giveaway items, photography, video production, graphic development)
  • Collateral (sell sheets, brochures, business cards)
  • Events (trade shows, webinars)
  • Direct Marketing (email, direct mail, list generation, promotional incentives/contests)
  • Public Relations (press release distribution, PR agency)
  • Research (focus groups, surveys, marketing reference books)
  • Social Media (social media networks)
  • Website (search engine optimization, web development/hosting)

Of course the actual components for your business may vary depending on your business, industry and marketing budget. The important thing is to identify all the potential components in your annual marketing plan so you can decide how you plan to address those components for your business. Even if you do not plan to allocate budget for a category – like social media – it should be included if you have any marketing efforts planned for the category so strategies and tactics can be outlined in an integrated planning approach.

Define Marketing Plan Strategies, Tactics and Budget

Once marketing components are outlined for the business, all potential strategies and tactics should be defined per category or component.

Here is an example of defining strategies and tactics for the “advertising” category:

Marketing Category: Advertising
Strategy #1 – Drive traffic to website via online advertising
Tactic # 1 – Google Adwords
Tactic #2 – Banner ads on industry association website
Tactic #3 – Internet yellow pages ads

Each tactic will also need to have an allocated budget, if applicable. The marketing plan should include fields to capture your allocated budget, actual spend and budget variance so that you can track throughout the year and make any adjustments needed. For example, if you are tracking under budget in one category you can shift funds to another category where you may be tracking over budget.

Flexibility to adapt an annual marketing plan throughout the year is important to adapt to a changing business environment and be “opportunistic” in marketing efforts. Be sure to take advantage of tracking mechanisms for marketing efforts whenever possible – such as unique 800 numbers or website analytic reports – so that you can make adjustments to maximize performance of campaigns (or dump marketing efforts that are not producing desired results). Goals should also be set for all areas of a marketing plan so that you can measure the performance of marketing tactics against business objectives.

SALES METHODOLOGIES

Personal selling is a promotional method in which one party uses skills and techniques for building personal relationships with another party that results in both parties obtaining value. Personal selling occurs whenever an individual salesperson sells a product, service or solution to a client.

Sales methods

There are many different sales methods that can be used to complete a sale and form the required relationships. Determining which sales method is more effective depends on what you are selling, who you are selling to and when you are selling it.

6.   Closing
7.   After-sales follow-up

communication and d2d marketing management

Effective communication and advertising management is important to not only correctly identify a target audience, but also to reach this audience efficiently through different information channels. There are many benefits of successfully managing these marketing communications, including, but not limited to:

  • A higher Return on Investment  (ROI)
  • Reaching more of your target audience
  • Reduced costs for d2d marketing
  • Types of market segmentation:
    • Demographic segmentation: gender, age, income, education, occupation
    • Geographic segmentation: city, state, country
    • Psychographic segmentation: attitudes, values, attitudes, lifestyle
    • Behavioural segmentation: purchasing patterns, loyalty status

Developing an Annual Marketing Plan and Marketing Strategy

d2d marketing Service Provider Agency Katraj Pune

Fulcrum Marketing is a strategic d2d marketing Service Provider Agency Katraj Pune. Our team of marketing consultants also specialise in marketing planning and d2d marketing for all types of business of any size.

MARKETING STRATEGY

Effective marketing organisations must be driven through sound business strategy. Fulcrum produce marketing strategy that is always well embodied by your business strategy.

The best marketing strategy does not start with creative, it starts with a marketing process.

The Fulcrum Marketing Strategy Development Process is a thorough problem solving and marketing strategy development program that focusses on solving your growth challenges and maximising the return from your company’s marketing operations.  It is particularly useful for innovating within a market or creating a position of market leadership.

Overview

Indentifying key sources of growth, challenging the current business operations and identifying key growth creating activities are crucial for businesses which want to grow.

The process looks at your whole business with the aim to maximise the potential by focussing on:

  • reviewing your market conditions
  • reviewing your current market challenges and capabilities
  • identifying and maximising competitive advantage
  • creating and amplifying market positioning
  • developing new revenue sources
  • maximising market communication techniques

Action Orientated

Fulcrum works alongside senior management to develop achievable and actionable strategies and build the company plans around them. Real results are achieved when your management team have consistent and ongoing interaction with the Fulcrum team.

6.   Closing
7.   After-sales follow-up

communication and d2d marketing management

Effective communication and advertising management is important to not only correctly identify a target audience, but also to reach this audience efficiently through different information channels. There are many benefits of successfully managing these marketing communications, including, but not limited to:

  • A higher Return on Investment  (ROI)
  • Reaching more of your target audience
  • Reduced costs for d2d marketing
  • Types of market segmentation:
    • Demographic segmentation: gender, age, income, education, occupation
    • Geographic segmentation: city, state, country
    • Psychographic segmentation: attitudes, values, attitudes, lifestyle
    • Behavioural segmentation: purchasing patterns, loyalty status

Implementing a d2d marketing Strategy

Implementing a Marketing Strategy Execution Plan, known to Fulcrum and our clients as a “Sprint Plan” is the most effective way to prevent this highway-less journey , d2d marketing Service Provider Agency Katraj Pune.

Small Business Brand Marketing:d2d marketing | Local Marketing Agent Breach Candy

5 Tips For Taking Your Brand to Market

Part 1 of our Brand Basics for Small Business series, we covered the crucial first steps to setting up your brand. Once you’ve taken those initial steps and got your brand off the ground, the next stage is to start marketing, in order to raise awareness of your brand, build a customer base, and drive sales for your business. To help you get started, we’ve got five important tips for taking your brand to market.

Tip 1: Get your messaging right

In business, first impressions mean a great deal – so what your initial marketing communicates about your brand will shape the (usually lasting) opinion potential customers form about your brand.

Spend time developing clear, compelling brand messaging that succinctly communicates your brand, ties in with your brand identity, and is relevant to your target audience. Bear in mind that as your brand develops and grows, you’ll need to be able to continue delivering this messaging consistently across all platforms, so getting it right in the early stages is essential.

Tip 2: Choose the right channels

Small businesses are faced with a vast array of potential marketing tactics through which to promote their brand. From digital marketing to direct mail, the key is to identify those channels that are most appropriate to your brand – and are most likely to attract the attention of potential customers. This is where thorough market research (discussed in Part 1) is vital, as you’ll need a clear understanding of your target audience and what channels have the best chance of reaching them.

Potential marketing channels include email marketing, brochures and flyers, social media, event marketing and many more. For some ideas on using a selection of these channels successfully, check out our Guide to Becoming Marketing Active.

Tip 3: Provide clear calls to action – and incentives for following them

Whether your call to action is driving traffic to your website, encouraging email newsletter opt-ins, or increasing your social media following, you need to make this call to action as clear and straightforward as possible. Confusion or ambiguity is an immediate turn-off, so make sure you spell out exactly what people need to do and how to do it.

Behind every call to action, you need to answer the question that is inevitably on the minds of your audience: “what’s in it for me?”. By providing compelling incentives for performing the desired action, your audience is much more likely to follow your lead.

Tip 4: Go for the highest quality you can afford

While budget will always play an important role in small business marketing considerations, opting for cheap-looking, inferior quality marketing materials can do considerable damage to your brand in both the short-term and the long-term. At this early stage it’s important to remember that, as mentioned above, first impressions are critical.

Quality doesn’t just extend to the physical materials on which your marketing is delivered. Skimping on components like copywriting or design can be just as off-putting as cheap paper, so avoid cutting costs by doing it yourself. If price is an issue, consider taking a ‘less is more’ approach and focusing on doing a few key tactics well.

Tip 5: Know your goals from the outset

Before you commence any type of marketing, you need to know what you want to achieve from this activity. Once you’ve established a set of clearly defined goals, you will be able to identify the steps you need to take to achieve these targets.

When setting marketing goals, it’s important to choose targets that are achievable, as well as ensuring you are as clear as possible about your goals. Be specific about what each goal involves and outline timeframes for achievement to work towards. In addition, it’s vital to make sure your marketing goals are easy to track and measure.

While there are many other areas you’ll need to consider before embarking on a marketing strategy, taking time to focus on these five areas will provide you with a strong starting point on which to build.

Stay tuned for the final part of our Brand Basics series, in which we’ll be looking at how to maintain your brand in the long term.

We’d love to hear your experiences of taking a brand to market – if you’ve got your own tips, why not share them with the MIH community? Get in touch by leaving your comments below…

A Selling Attitude

Good selling , Marketing activation &d2d marketing requires that you understand the product well and work to appreciate the customer’s requirement. But before and beyond all that, the secret of a good salesperson is about what goes on inside their head.

Above all, selling is an attitude. It’s how you think and feel. It’s about your whole approach to yourself, your company, your products and, of course, your customers. All of this can be condensed to three words: Confidence, pride and care.

Confidence
The basis of all successful selling is confidence. This does not mean blind hope — it is more about how you think about yourself and the future.

Self-belief
A confident person believes in themself and their abilities to sell. In order to create trust, the first thing that you sell is yourself. Whilst self-belief does not guarantee a sale, it always increases the probability of success.

If you go into a selling situation and you do not even believe in yourself, then you are doomed to failure. If you do not believe in yourself then the customer will not believe in you either, nor will they believe what you say. Your doubt will become their doubt and doubt does not lead to the sale.

Informed optimism
Blind belief is not always a good thing. Being positive because you have studied the product and the customer is greater reason to be confident. Belief and optimism provide powerful support but they do not replace factual knowledge.

If you are ready to sell, with good information at your fingertips, them you have good reason to be optimistic. Even if you do not have complete information (and who does), a tendency to optimism also helps create a positive attitude.

Can-do
Finally, self-belief and an optimistic approach lead to a ‘can-do’ attitude which means you will get out there and create the sale through your thoughts and actions. Belief is not enough: you’ve got to put in the work too.

Pride
There are two forms of pride. As one of the seven deadly sins, it can be a very selfish thing. But pride placed outside yourself is an important attitude that communicates and transmits itself to your customers.

Pride in the company
First, you should be proud to work at your company. Associating yourself with the brand and the brand values should make you feel good. You should be happy to tell others where you work.

Pride in the product
Secondly, you should be proud of what you are selling. Just thinking that you have the privilege of selling such a fine product should make you very happy indeed.

As with pride in the company, an intrinsic pride in the product is a powerful motivator, both for you and for your customer.

Care
Finally, a selling attitude is a caring attitude. Rather than just dump products on customers, if you want them to ever come back again, you should care about them and their problems, and hence be proud of how your products will help.

Care for customers can include taking time out from the normal selling context to check up on them, that the product is working ok and that they are happy with it. It can even include sending them Christmas and birthday cards — to their partner too.

When others know that you care about them, personally, then they will be far more willing to trust you — and trust is the first doorway towards selling.

Seasonal Marketing Opportunities

Preparing your business for the upcoming seasonal events Marketing activation, d2d marketing  ahead can be an exciting opportunity to connect with your audience, increase traffic and boost profits and revenue whether it’s Festival or Christmas. We have a few tips (and tricks) on how to plan your national holiday campaigns and apply them for your business through visual displays.

Tip #1: Make a statement Imagine you are creating a scene. The first step to creating your seasonal campaign is to identify the holiday and research your ideas accordingly. Think outside-of-the-box by brainstorming and using holiday keywords to build up your ideas and taking them to the next level. To avoid any generic ideas, you can combine your business services with the holiday of your choice for extra creativity. For example, if your store sells a certain product such as , you can create a humorous cardboard cutout of Santa wearing Christmas or a Santa mannequin as a prop and centralise your holiday decorations around that. It would draw attention to your store and therefore increase traffic for your business.

Tip #2: Consider the type of signage solutions and displays you want Banners and signages are the silent sales assistants that you’ll need for your store. They provide the quickest ways to inform your customers about your products, as well as giving them a glimpse on the offers and benefits of your store. They are great tools for any retail display and will go hand-in-hand with your seasonal campaign.

Tip #3: Choose the right colour schemes Colours make a world of difference when it comes to displays and the right colour schemes can either make or break your store presentation. Consider what certain colours remind you of that particular holiday and see if you can link your business brand colours together with that season. Try to aim for less than 3-4 colours in your palette with a primary colour as your main hero and a few complementary colours to balance it out so that your displays aren’t too overwhelming or contrasting.

Tip #4: Remember the importance of placement and positioning There is no point into creating a great holiday display if your customers are unable to find it. Have an idea of where your customers will see your displays and map out the direction you want them to follow by considering the placement and positioning of your props and decorations. If you have a storefront window, use mannequins, cardboard cutouts and props to create a scene. If your business is limited with space, consider displaying an interest piece at the front of your store to evoke curiosity and lure them inside with accompanying decorations.

Tip #5: Keep it fresh Recycling the same old displays every year can be a big no-no for your business. Bob Phibbs from Retail Doc advises that “when you go cheap, you stay another also-ran, bland and boring warehouse of goods in search of someone’s money. Make your decorated store fresh, make it fun and use more lights than you think you should.”

What Are Market Segmentation

Market Segmentation

What Are Markets

Markets are a group of potential buyers with needs and wants and the purchasing power to satisfy them.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Diagram the different types of markets and their relationship to one another

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Key Points

  • Markets can be more tightly defined as a people who have a true need or want for the company’s offering, the ability to pay for it, and the willingness and authority to buy it. The total number of buyers must be large enough to be profitable for the company.
  • Markets can also be a place such as a shopping center. This identification of markets is useful for marketing decision-making purposes because factors such as product features, price, location of facilities, and promotional design are affected by geographic factors.
  • The market can be defined as an economic entity because in most cases, a market is characterized by a dynamic system of economic forces including supply, demand, competition, and government intervention.
  • The primary types of markets are consumer markets, industrial markets, institutional markets, and reseller markets. These categories are not always clear-cut and in some industries, a business may be in a different category altogether or may even encompass multiple categories.

Key Terms

  • latent: Existing or present but concealed or inactive.
  • esoteric: Confidential; private.
  • buyer’s market: An excess of supply over demand, leading to abnormally low prices. A situation when there is an abundance of product, prices are usually low, and customers dictate the terms of sale.

Defining the Market

A basic definition of a market is a group of potential buyers with needs and wants and the purchasing power to satisfy them.

We will also consider a more expansive definition given the complexities of these components.

The Market is People: Since exchange involves two or more people, the market can be thought of as people, individuals, or groups. People constitute markets only if they currently recognize their need or desire for an existing or future product.

Individuals and members of households are the largest category of markets, but business establishments and other organized behavior systems also represent valid markets. However, people or organizations must meet all five of the following basic criteria in order to represent a valid market:

  • There must be a true need or want for the product, service, or idea; this need may be recognized, unrecognized, or latent.
  • The person or organization must have the ability to pay for the product via means acceptable to the marketer.
  • The person or organization must be willing to buy the product.
  • The person or organization must have the authority to buy the product.
  • The total number of people or organizations meeting the previous criteria must be large enough to be profitable for the marketer.

The Market is a Place: The market can also be thought of as a place or as a geographical area within which trading occurs. International markets, American markets, a shopping center, and even the site of a single retail store can be called a market.

people walking around the hall of a shopping mall with stores around

Shopping Mall: A market is a place where trading takes place. An example of a market is a shopping mall.

This identification of markets is useful for marketing decision-making purposes because factors such as product features, price, location of facilities, and promotional design are all affected by geographic factors. Finally, a market may be somewhere other than a geographical region, such as a catalog or ad that allows you to place an order without a marketing intermediary.

The Market is an Economic Entity: In most cases, a market is characterized by a dynamic system of economic forces including supply, demand, competition, and government intervention. The terms buyer’s market and seller’s market describe different conditions of bargaining strength. Finally, the extent of personal freedom and government control produces free market systems, socialistic systems, and other systems of trade and commerce.

Types of markets

The primary types of markets are consumer markets, industrial markets, institutional markets, and reseller markets.

These categories are not always clear-cut. In some industries, a business may be in a different category altogether or may even encompass multiple categories. It is also possible that a product may be sold in all four markets.

Consumer Markets

Consumer markets include individuals and households who buy consumer goods and services for their own personal use. They are not interested in reselling the product or setting themselves up as a manufacturer.

Industrial Markets

The industrial market consists of organizations and the people who work for them, those who buy products or services for use in their own businesses or to make other products. For example, a steel mill might purchase computer software, pencils, and flooring as part of the operation and maintenance of their business.

Institutional Markets

The institutional market is made up of various types of profit and nonprofit institutions, such as hospitals, schools, churches, and government agencies. Institutional markets differ from typical businesses because they are motivated by satisfying esoteric, often intangible, needs rather than profits or market share. Because institutions operate under different restrictions and employ different goals, marketers must use different strategies to be successful.

Reseller Markets

All intermediaries that buy finished or semi-finished products and resell them for profit are part of the reseller market. This market includes approximately 383,000 wholesalers and 1,300,000 retailers that operate in the US.

With the exception of products obtained directly from the producer, all products are sold through resellers. Producers are always cognizant of the fact that successful marketing to resellers is just as important as successful marketing to consumers.

Chapter 6- Marketing Basics

Max and Mina’s Homemade Ice Cream and Ices

Growing up in the 1970s, Bruce and Mark Becker loved ice cream. Their Grandpa Max used to create all different kinds of ice cream for Grandma Mina and the boys to try. Grandpa was an organic chemist and loved to create some interesting flavors. Years later, after Grandpa Max passed away, Bruce was cleaning out his grandpa’s house and discovered his secret book of recipes.

And so it began.

In the 1980s, Bruce started on his journey and traveled throughout Europe and the United States doing gourmet ice cream research. With all the new information gathered and the treasure trove of Grandpa Max’s secret recipes, Bruce and Mark opened Max and Mina’s Ice Cream in 1997 in a shopping center next to Shimon’s Pizza Falafel Dairy Restaurant in Flushing, Queens, New York. They test marketed their recipes directly to the public. The public loved it—and so did the local restaurants and party planners.

Max and Mina’s Ice Cream revolutionized America’s favorite dessert with daring ingredients and bold innovation. Their unique ability to intrigue and challenge old notions of mundane flavors draws unbelievable attention at home in New York and around the globe. The most distant customer of note was from Australia, someone who insisted on going to Max and Mina’s right off the plane at Kennedy Airport.

The Beckers make their ice cream products with at least 16 percent butterfat, putting them into the gourmet category. All their ice creams are kosher, but some products adhere to even stricter dairy guidelines. The shop itself features an array of posters, a display of Wacky Packages bubblegum stickers, candy wrappers, a Jerry Garcia etching, and old-fashioned signs.

A visit to Max and Mina’s will be an unusual ice cream experience (see Note 6.2 “Video Clip 6.1”). If you dare to take the plunge, why not try unforgettable flavors like beer, lox, babka, corn-on-the-cob, ketchup, garlic, or merlot—just to mention a few? There are also many of the more traditional flavors that you know and love. There is a rotating menu of one thousand flavors, but only about forty ice cream flavors and eight to ten sorbets are available at any one time. Bruce and Mark constantly encourage their patrons to be vocal in brainstorming new flavors, especially flavors that compliment events. Turkey ice cream, anyone? Have an idea? Foundations for Successful Sales

What is Sales?

Before learning more about how to do successful sales and selling, it’s important first to get a sense of what sales is, so you can more accurately understand the guidelines, tips and tools provided throughout this topic. Also, it’s useful to understand different viewpoints about sales, especially so you can more accurately understand how your clients talk about sales.

Understanding the Sales Process (Sales Pipeline)

There is a general, overall process that successful sales people follow, although there are different perspectives on that process, including names for the various steps along the way. The next major section in this topic includes more detailed guidelines, tips and tools for each stage of one perspective on the sales process, or sales pipeline as some people refer to it.

Understanding the Sales Cycle

The sales cycle is often referred to as the time it takes to do the sales process mentioned above. Timing is critical because the faster and shorter the sales cycle, the faster that more revenue is generated, customers are satisfied and more customers can be gotten by the organization.

Value of Product Knowledge

There’s an old saying that a “good salesman can sell anything.” That’s not so true today when the nature of products and services can be highly complex and the nature of customers and clients can be highly demanding. Yet there’s an ongoing argument about which is best — product knowledge or sales skills.

A lead is a potential customer. (Later, in the sales process, you will qualify the lead to determine if he/she is a prospect, that is, is someone who is very likely to buy from you.) Sales channels are the methods by which salespeople and customers communicate with each other. The resources that are referenced in this subtopic usually give advice about how best to use a particular channel in sales, but don’t go primarily with that advice — also follow the guidelines in each phase of a sales process, so that you’re following guidelines in a systematic manner.

2. Qualifying the Client — Is Client a Prospect?

Once you have a list of leads, you need to qualify them, that is, you need to assess whether they are likely to buy your product or service based on, for example, their needs and wants, match between their needs and wants and the nature of your products and services, key decisions by the decision makers, ability to pay and preferences for the timing to buy. A qualified lead is a prospect. (Depending on the nature of your product or service, you might be asked to provide a proposal, even without having an opportunity to more carefully qualify the lead. In that situation, you can skip to the section Proposals.)

Understand the Needs and Wants of Each Lead — Ask the Right Questions

One of the worst approaches now is to start “pitching” or pushing your product or service. Instead, learn more about the lead, especially by asking useful questions. Here’s where the guidelines in the previous topic Understanding Types of Clients and How to Engage Them are especially useful because you’ll need to really understand more about the lead in order to discern if they are a prospect, if they are likely to buy from you.

Getting to Decision-Makers

Often, the person you first contact is not the person who ultimately will decide whether to buy from you. So even if the first person really likes your product or service, it’s as important that you influence the real decision maker. Many times, that person is a very busy upper manager who does not want to be bothered by someone trying to sell something to him or her.

Following-Up With Potential Prospects

Effective follow-up shows you are thorough in your work and are sincerely committed to working with the prospect. Also, your follow-up often reminds the prospect of your initial contact– a contact that they might have forgotten in their busy work lives.

4. Sales Proposals and Negotiations

Proposals and Sales Letters

If you have been successful in prospecting the lead and the prospect indeed is interested in your product or service, then you might be asked to provide a proposal that provides more information about your organization, its products and services, and how you would work with the potential client. The client also might be asking several vendors to provide proposals, so that the client can have more choices from which to choose.

Negotiations

Often, your proposal or sales letter is the first time that the client really absorbs the details of the opportunity that you’re bring to him or her. It’s not uncommon that the client wants to modify certain terms or pricing. Thus, it’s useful for you to have at least some basic skills in negotiating.

5. Closing the Sale

The closing process is getting the commitment of the prospect to buy your product or service. The close is when the client has committed. It represents the close, or ending, of the sale process. However, many would assert that the sales process really doesn’t end there, rather the sales process continues to ensure a strong, successful relationship with the client even after a contrast has been signed.

The power of your brand message is the key to driving sales

There is a proven set of criteria used to test creative effectiveness of shopper communication called the 4C’s: Command, Connect, Convey, and Close. The better the ad performs against these metrics the better the ad does in driving conversion.

The first step is to Command Attention. Shopper communication that drives sales must first engage the shopper – invite her in. The idea is to let the shopper know you’re there. It’s a conversational wave across the room, a tap on the shoulder, a shout-out in the crowded area. However this is harder than it seems. In any retail context, the shoppers are on autopilot as they navigate the store, app, or website. The goal is to catch their eye, invite their attention, and get noticed.

The Tactics: Color, Shape, Size, Texture, White Space, Placement (above the fold), Violating Space, Motion, Dynamic Imagery, Scent, Sound

The Assessment: Does it attract peripheral vision in an in-store context or leverage the online medium with movement or dynamic imagery?

Does the execution use distinctive color, shape, size, sound, etc., and engage the shopper?

There are a number of effective ways to command attention.

Size, sound, motion, texture, distinctive color, and shape all work in store because shoppers shop at retail with their peripheral vision – their minds are constantly filtering inputs and their eyes are drawn to what’s different in the environment.

In the digital screen as well as the store, the eyes are drawn to what’s different in the environment. Simple, bold images; ads above the fold; faces, motion, and disruptive visuals all help to draw interest.

Be aware in the effort to gain attention to not go overboard and create disruption for its own sake. Elicit positive interest for the retailer at the POS to achieve a favorable shopper experience. Retailers prefer an invite vs. screaming at their shoppers.

Does it matter to shoppers? Yes! Below is an example of what happens when a brand enhances Command.
